16 States Updates: Release Date & Story Details | Screen Rant

Evil Dead remake and Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez has found his latest project, a horror film about a zombie pandemic titled 16 States. There's no doubt that 2020 has been and will likely continue to be dominated by the Coronavirus. The death toll continues to rise, as does the number of infections, and it's quite possible the world will never get back to exactly the way it was before this began. One would think that would make people want to avoid movies and TV shows about pandemics, but it seems the opposite is true.

Director Steven Soderbergh's star-studded 2011 film Contagion has been at or near the top of rental charts for weeks now, while the short-lived CW series Containment pulls in big views on Netflix. People can't seem to stop comparing Stephen King's The Stand to the spread of the Coronavirus, and the 1995 film Outbreak is also seeing a resurgence in popularity. Whether it's trying to learn new information through entertainment or simply morbid curiosity, Americans really love watching depictions of deadly viruses right now.

In making 16 States, director Alvarez and studio Lionsgate seem to be banking on the idea that audience interest in pandemics won't abate anytime soon, even after things cool down enough for movie theaters to reopen. Here's everything we know so far about the film.

16 States was recently offered up to Hollywood as a spec script from Jungle Cruise writing duo John Requa & Glenn Ficarra, with multiple studios immediately showing interest. With Fede Alvarez already attached to direct, that helped sweeten the deal, and after a short bidding war, Lionsgate emerged victorious. However, as the project is still in the early stages, Lionsgate has yet to confirm a release window or date for 16 States. With a director already attached and a script already written though, one assumes the film will enter production fairly soon.

There isn't much yet known about 16 States, outside of that it's set during a zombie pandemic, and centers on a mother traveling long distance across the country to reach her family. Industry reports compare 16 States to the 2007 Will Smith hit I Am Legend, which cast Smith as seemingly the last man on Earth in a deserted New York City after a plague turned most humans into monsters. Clearly though, the person at the center of 16 States isn't quite on her own, at least not yet, which suggests it still being early in the zombie apocalypse.
