Created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, How I Met Your Mother has been called one of the best sitcoms of the 21st century, due to its excellent writing and its talented, ensemble cast. After 9 well-received seasons (and one not-that-well-received series finale), the show is still loved years after its conclusion.
The show made fans laugh and cry in a way no other show has. So, here are five times How I Met Your Mother was heartwarming, and five times it was heartbreaking.
10 Heartwarming - Marvin's Last Words
After Marshall's dad passes away, he leaves his last message for Marshall, which supposedly is "rent Crocodile Dundee III," and Marshall wonders if those are the last words a father should leave his kid. It turns out his actual last words were that he loved him, and also suggesting an ointment for foot fungus.
Later, at the memorial service, he reveals his father's last words to him were about Crocodile Dundee III - he kept the rest just for himself. It was heartwarming to see the kind of loving relationship he and his dad had.
9 Heartbreaking - Marshall's Dad Passes Away
In season 6's "Bad News," at the end of the episode, Lily meets Marshall and tells him she just had a call - his father had a heart attack and has passed away.
While it was heartbreaking in itself, Jason Segel's heartbroken expression and subsequent, "I'm not ready for this." was even sadder. Apparently, the line was improvised by Segel as he wasn't told beforehand that Marshall's father was dead.
8 Heartwarming - Barney Going To San Fransisco
After Marshall and Lily break up, Marshall becomes a wreck and gets extremely depressed. After Marshall gets sad again, Barney apparently leaves, quite rudely, which the others interpret as him not caring for anyone.
However, it turns out Barney left because he decides to go to San Fransisco and convince Lily to come back to Marshall, and that Lily would be back in a second if she knew what Marshall was going through.
7 Heartbreaking - Barney Leaves Nora For Robin But She Doesn't Leave Kevin
In the season 7 episode, "Tick Tick Tick," after Barney and Robin cheat on Nora and Kevin by hooking up with each other, Barney tells Robin to tell their partners, and get back together. While Barney tells Nora and breaks up, Robin doesn't dump Kevin.
It's extremely heartbreaking as 'time stops' for Barney and he leaves the bar. Barney had a surprise for Robin up in her room, and heartbroken, he cleans it all up.
6 Heartwarming - Ted Finds Victoria
After having an amazing night at Stuart and Claudia's wedding with a girl, Ted realizes he has fallen in love with her and spends the whole next day trying to figure out who she is. It turns out she was not a guest. Instead, she was the baker who made the wedding cake.
Ted jumps in a cab and goes to Victoria's bakery. The sweetest moment was when Victoria herself said, "Oh thank God," and rushed to kiss Ted. It was great to see Victoria had fallen for Ted as well.
5 Heartbreaking - Lily Leaves Marshall
After Lily feels she needs to explore herself more, she and Marshall have a big fight. She calls off the wedding, leaves Marshall and decides to move to San Fransisco to attend a summer art program.
It was heartbreaking to see Marshall and Lily, such a perfect couple, break up. Even sadder was the fact that Robin had just agreed to go out with Ted, and while he was happiest he had ever been, Marshall was at his worst.
4 Heartwarming - The Leap
Marshall always talked about leaping off his rooftop to the other building, which had a hot tub. At Ted's 31st birthday, at the end of the episode, "The Leap," he finally jumps, and everyone follows him including Ted.
It was as much a metaphorical leap for him, as he was overcoming all the problems in his life - losing his job, failing his startup, getting left at the altar, and worst of all, getting beat up by a goat. The episode ended on a really hopeful note.
3 Heartbreaking - Robin Can't Have Kids
In "The Symphony of Illusion," Robin has a pregnancy scare which turns out to be false. However, the doctor then tells her that she can't ever have kids. While kids were never part of Robin's life plan, it was heartbreaking anyway, as she had thought about having children.
Throughout the episode, Robin talks to her "future" children like Ted does, who turn put to be imaginary. She refuses to tell the others, and it was extremely sad to see her dealing with it, all alone on a park bench.
2 Heartwarming - Ted Cheers Up Robin
After Robin finds out she can't have kids, Ted tells her that even though she won't tell him what she's going through, that won't stop him from trying to cheer up Robin.
He sets up an elaborate surprise for her including Christmas lights and a classic AC/DC song (can't go wrong with "Highway To Hell"), and it's extremely heartwarming to see Ted be there for Robin.
1 Heartbreaking - Ted Gets Left At The Altar
Perhaps the worst thing Ted has gone through. Stella leaves him at the altar. After Ted allows Tony, Stella's ex-husband, to come to his and Stella's wedding, she leaves him for Tony. She leaves a note saying that Tony is her daughter's father and how she still loves him.
At the end of the episode, we see Robin leaving the wedding, and on a barge, sees Stella and Tony running away. It was extremely sad because of how much Ted loved Stella, and being left at the altar is such a terrible thing to have to go through.
