Arrowverse: 5 Unhealthy Relationships (& 5 That Were Surprisingly Wholesome)

Ever since the Arrowverse began its run in 2012 through Arrow, several relationships have come to life. Whether it originated from the comics or began as its own thing within the respective shows, there have been plenty of dynamics for fans to follow. But some have been better than others as there are relationships to love as well as several to hate. With the franchise having expanded as much as it has with spinoffs like The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, to Superman & Lois, the relationships have come a long way.

Whether it is romantic couples or friendships, some have gotten to a solid place while others have remained as problematic. But then there have been a few surprises along the way that have become iconic dynamics within the Arrowverse. These are the 5 unhealthy relationships as well as 5 of the most surprisingly wholesome dynamics in the Arrowverse.

10 UNHEALTHY: Kendra Saunders & Carter Hall

Even though they were cursed to be reincarnated, the romance between Kendra Saunders and Carter Hall was one of the low points for Arrowverse’s relationships. Despite being in love, this combination has more downs than ups since they first came together.

Regardless if they still have memories of their past lives together, it doesn’t make a lot of sense that their love was still intact in each life. On-screen, it never seemed logical for these two to be deeply in love with one another. Despite being a power couple in the comics, the Legends of Tomorrow incarnation never lived up to it.

9 SURPRISINGLY WHOLESOME: Wally West & Jesse Wells

Even though Kid Flash and Jesse Quick have different love interests in the comics, The Flash version of the speedsters took a surprising turn. For a short period, the two young heroes had a love story that unfortunately had to come to an end with both actors eventually leaving the series for other projects. But it still didn’t change the fact that this surprising dynamic was one of the sweeter couples in The CW’s DC franchise.

8 UNHEALTHY: Kara Zor-El & Mon-El

Supergirl season 2 had the Girl of Steel begin a romance with Mon-El after he had crashed on Earth in the season 1 finale. But despite strong chemistry between the actors, the foundation of the romance comes from several problematic angles. For starters, Mon-El came in at a time where Kara was just beginning to embrace her feelings for James.

Having previously been the male lead of the series, James ended up being replaced by Mon-El which isn’t a good look in the long run. The romance always felt rushed compared to some of the couples on the other shows. Having spent barely one season together as a couple, it escalated way too quickly. There is also the fact that Mon-El lied to Kara for the longest time about who he really was.

7 SURPRISINGLY WHOLESOME: Roy Harper & Thea Queen

While they didn’t get their happy ending until the series finale, Arrow’s Speedy and Arsenal still remains one of the franchise’s loveliest surprises.  Even though their dynamic began hilariously with Roy stealing Thea’s purse, they came a long way after his attempt at robbery. Thea and Roy respectively found their paths as heroes while also pursuing a romance that hit a stop until it got revisited in later seasons. Despite only appearing in a few episodes towards the end, the young heroes eventually found their way to each other as the series finale had them get engaged.

6 UNHEALTHY: Oliver Queen & Sara Lance

Even though the dynamic between Green Arrow and White Canary is a big one, it came to life in all the wrong ways. Despite Sara being a completely different character in the present, the former League of Assassins member got to where she is by betraying her sister. While Laurel was together with Oliver, he cheated on her by hooking up with Sara as they went on the yacht together.

This was the beginning of their lives being changed forever as they became the heroes they are today. But it doesn’t change the fact their relationship was born at the expense of Laurel’s feelings. To that regard, that is what makes Oliver and Sara’s relationship unhealthy at least based on how they started.

5 SURPRISINGLY WHOLESOME: Barry Allen & Kara Zor-El

Once it was revealed that a crossover between The Flash and Supergirl was happening, there was a lot of anticipation. What would their dynamic be like once the shared the screen? Even though they don’t have a big dynamic in the comics, other than being members of the Justice League, the TV incarnations quickly became a friendship to look up to. In just one episode, Barry and Kara became true super-friends and is one of the Arrowverse’s most enjoyable duos to follow anytime they get together.

4 UNHEALTHY: Barry Allen & Patty Spivot

It was a known fact that Barry was destined to be with Iris West from the day The Flash started. But it didn’t stop the series from exploring the two of them with different partners before eventually getting together. In Barry’s case, one of his love interests was Patty Spivot.

But similarly to other Arrowverse relationships, this one escalated way too fast that made the dynamic feel forced. Despite Patty not even being a series regular, she ended up getting more screentime than Iris did in the first half of season 2. It also didn't help the fact that Patty had to trick Barry into revealing his secret identity as their relationship was coming to an end.

3 SURPRISINGLY WHOLESOME: Oliver Queen & John Diggle

From day 1 when they first met, the relationship between Oliver and John Diggle could have gone into any direction. Given that Oliver was taking Diggle into a dangerous crusade that would put both of their lives at risk it's still astonishing that they made it until the very end before Oliver passed away. Throughout 8 seasons, the relationship became very brotherly that had its ups and downs in Arrow's entire run. But as troublesome as their interaction were at times, it only helped make it stronger all the way into the show's final season.

2 UNHEALTHY: Oliver Queen & Laurel Lance

In the comics, Green Arrow and Black Canary are one of DC's most iconic power couples. But in the case of Arrow, things didn't go that way as Oliver ended up with Felicity Smoak instead. However, the biggest obstacle Laurel and Oliver's relationship had was the fact that Oliver had commitment issues. While their dynamic healed in later seasons before Laurel's death, their relationship was the unhealthiest relationship in the entire franchise.

1 SURPRISINGLY WHOLESOME: Oliver Queen & Barry Allen

The day Oliver and Barry met each other, it was the beginning of one of the Arrowverse's most iconic duos. Season after season, their relationship grew for every crossover they did together. Not only were they phenomenal allies, but they became best friends who brought out the best in each other. With Oliver's tragic death in Crisis on Infinite Earths, the end of their friendship is a hard loss for the Arrowverse going forward.
