NBC's Brooklyn Nine-Nine, already renewed for an eighth season, is one of the most uplifting and heartwarming shows on television. The show is known for taking on issues and sensitive topics like racism, sexuality and sexual harassment, issues that other shows usually refrain from discussing, for fear of alienating their audience.
Created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur (well-known for creating other uplifting comedies such as Parks and Recreation and The Good Place), the show has some of the most heartwarming and emotional moments, despite being a comedy. So, here are 10 moments in Brooklyn Nine-Nine that tug at the viewers' heartstrings.
10 Santiago's Thanksgiving Party (S01)
In the season 1 episode, "Thanksgiving", Amy throws the squad a Thanksgiving dinner, which Jake repeatedly tries to get out of, since he always hated Thanksgiving at his childhood home. After he and Captain Holt are called away for a case, Holt tells Jake how he can choose his own family and new traditions now, and Jake finally makes it to the party and gives a very moving toast.
The characters are really fleshed out, as the viewers learn that despite his aloofness, Captain Holt sees the squad as his family, and how Jake, too, has a special bond with the new family he chose.
9 Terry Defends His Squad's Self Evaluations (S01)
In the episode, "The Apartment", Captain Holt and Sergeant Jeffords ask the squad to conduct self-evaluations, which they all end up bombing. Scully gets too nervous to talk, Charles and Rosa basically harass a fellow detective and Amy gets extremely distressed when she thinks Holt doesn't like her.
However, Terry vigorously defends the squad, pointing out how the detectives are an asset, rather than pointing out their flaws. It's quite heartwarming to see Sarge being a great leader and standing up for his detectives, even to Captain Holt, whom he respects a lot.
8 Jake Inviting Holt To The Weekend Getaway (S02)
Upon learning that Captain Holt was never invited to any outside-work event due to him being black and gay by his former squadmates, Jake invites him to a weekend getaway in the episode, "The Beach House". Throughout the episode, the squad is very uncomfortable having their boss around them outside of work.
However, Jake tells everyone about Holt's past, and everyone realizes their mistake. They try to make Holt feels comfortable by playing games with him at the end of the episode. Despite Jake's immaturity, he can have some deeply profound moments.
7 Captain Holt Returns To The Nine-Nine (S03)
In the episode, "The Oolong Slayer", Jake and Holt risk their jobs to catch a serial killer. When Jake succeeds in doing so, he decides to give the credit of catching the killer to the NYPD commissioner in exchange for a tiny favor - restoring Holt as the Captain of the Nine-Nine. It's extremely emotional to see Jake give up his childhood dream of being known for catching a serial killer.
When the squad asks him how he made Captain again, he looks meaningfully at Jake and says, "I guess someone had my back.". It's heartwarming to see Jake and Holt's relationship being so meaningful to both of them.
6 Jake Uplifting Terry After DC Parlov Lied (S04)
In "The Skyfire Circle", Terry reveals how he received an inscribed book by his hero, author DC Parlov. However, when the inscription turns out to be written by Parlov's assistant, Terry gets extremely upset about being lied to by his hero. However, Jake tries to uplift Terry by saying Terry is Jake's hero.
Jake tells Terry, "You're who I want to be when I grow up, Terry. And you should know that some dumb inscription in some stupid book isn't what made you who you are. And it bums me out that you can't see that.".
5 Terry Explaining Why He Became A Cop (S04)
In the season 4 episode, "Moo Moo", perhaps the saddest episode in the show, Terry gets discriminated against by a fellow cop. After Captain Holt advises him not to file a complaint out of fear of ruining his career, he then later tells him he will file it. Terry then reveals the reason he became a cop to Holt.
In a flashback, viewers see Terry standing up to some bullies, who run away after a cop shows up. Terry sees the policeman as a superhero and says he became a policeman because of that cop. It's very emotional to see Terry (and the show) address these issues.
4 Jake Endangering His Life So He Could Keep Talking To Amy In Prison (S05)
In the season 1 premiere, the warden catches Jake with a cell phone but allows him to keep it if he agrees to snitch on a gang leader within the prison, Romero. Later, when talking to Amy, Romero shows up and tells him if he turns out to be a snitch, he will kill Jake. Amy is listening to all this, meanwhile and asks Jake if everything is okay. Jake smiles and says, "Everything is fine. I'm talking to you."
It's amazing to see the lengths Jake goes just to keep talking to Amy. It's heartwarming to see Jake and Amy's relationship has progressed so much.
3 Jake's Proposal (S05)
In the season 5 episode, "HalloVeen", it's time for another annual edition of the Halloween Heist. Throughout the episode, Jake keeps saying how much he needs to win this year, and viewers get to learn why in the last few minutes of the episode - Jake asks Amy to marry him, with the proposal etched on the championship cummerbund.
In a long list of adorable Jake-Amy moments, such as The Bet and Amy's Double-Tuck, this one is definitely on the top of the list. Plus, the moment Jake realizes he wants Amy to be his wife (finding a mistake in the crossword), is extremely heartwarming as well.
2 The Squad Supporting Rosa After Game Night Got Ruined (S05)
After Rosa comes out as bisexual to her parents, and they don't show her any support, Rosa is sitting alone at her apartment when the squad shows up to cheer her up. They tell Rosa that they, too, are her family, and they want to have a Game Night with Rosa. It's heartwarming to see the squad Rosa such support and accept her.
Even more heartwarming is the fact that Rosa is so guarded and closed-off, yet she has clearly told the squad her address, which viewers have learned throughout the series that she doesn't tell anyone. Captain Holt has a moving conversation with Rosa. He says, "Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a better, more interesting place."
1 Rosa And Her Mom Make Amends (S06)
In the season 6 episode, "Crime Scene", Jake promises a victim's mother he'll solve her son's murder, which a detective should never do. When the mother says she had a fight with her son and that was the last time they ever talked, Rosa gets emotional. She says she hasn't talked to her mom since they fought.
At the end of the episode, viewers learned that Rosa took the initiative to make amends, and see her mom walking in and she and Rosa are about to go to lunch. Saying her mom say 'Mija' and 'Rosalita', their terms of affection, was very heartwarming and emotional.
