Community season 7 is the dream of many fans - but will that dream ever come true? The offbeat sitcom wrapped up production in 2015 after season 6. Never a huge hit, Community followed the antics of a study group, played by Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Chevy Chase, at a community college. Faculty members on campus included Ken Jeong, John Oliver, Jonathan Banks, and Michael K. Williams.
Community's scripts were witty and slightly surreal. Refreshingly different throughout its run, it often challenged its audience with the weird and unexpected all the way up through season 6. In general, presenting unexpected scenarios was its strong suit.
Community would feature a chase through a pillow and blanket fort that filled the halls of the school one week, and the next would offer an epic paintball fight (one of several shown in the series). Fans were introduced to the Dreamatorium (an empty room set aside for make believe play), presented with an alternate universe called The Darkest Timeline, and treated to a stop-motion animated Christmas episode. But after a cancellation, a revival, and another cancellation, Community season 7 now seems unlikely to ever arrive.
Community never really had it easy, but managed to make it as far as season 6. It battled against The Big Bang Theory in its timeslot, and creator/showrunner Dan Harmon was fired after season 3 and then rehired to helm it again for season 5. Chevy Chase left the cast after season 4, and Donald Glover departed during season 5. NBC cancelled Community after that season, but Yahoo! picked it up as a streaming series for season 6. That's where it ended its tumultuous ride.
After Community season 6 ended, Joel McHale said Yahoo! wanted to keep going, but season 7 would have been too expensive to make. The actors' contracts had expired, and would have had to have been renegotiated. Per Metro Weekly, he said, "All the actors on the show, almost without exception - their stock has risen significantly, and it's out of the pay rate that is affordable to make the show."
Although there are rumblings from time to time that Community season 7 might happen, it is unlikely. A Community movie probably has more of a chance. There has even been a hashtag campaign, #sixseasonsandamovie (itself inspired by an episode of Community), supporting that option.
Dan Harmon suggested the movie idea in 2015. He told TVLine, "We wait a little bit, let [the cast] explore their awesome careers, and then we get together for an awesome movie." He was still floating the idea in 2017. Alison Brie and Danny Pudi have also publicly stated their interest in doing the movie. But in 2018, Joel McHale joked about the difficulty in trying to get Donald Glover to come back, and pointed out that Dan Harmon was very busy working on his cartoon hit Rick & Morty, per Watch What Happens Live.
At this point Community season 7 is mostly a pipe dream, so the story could wind up being about anything. The fact that the cast is well past college age at this point isn't necessarily an issue, because many of the study group members were not your typical college demographic when the show kicked off.
If Community season 7 were to materialize, it's helpful to know season 6 ended with some prospective storylines for it. Jeff was already established as a teacher at the community college, and Britta was still working as a bartender. But Annie had landed an internship with the FBI, and Abed was going off to work as a production assistant on a sitcom.
It seems that the easiest and most logical approach would be to have Abed creating a sitcom based on his years at Greendale Community College, with the old gang coming back as consultants. It's just an idea, but one that might be worth seeing come together, for either a full season of Community or just a movie.
