Disney+ is working on a reboot of Doogie Howser, M.D., the show that aired from 1989 to 1993, starring Neil Patrick Harris as a teenage doctor. The show was co-created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley and ran on ABC for four seasons.
According to Variety, the reboot will have a female lead, a 16-year-old half-Asian, half-white girl who works as a genius doctor in Hawaii, and the working title is Doogie Kealoha, M.D. The creative team behind the show is lead by executive producer and writer Kourtney Kang, who previously worked as an executive producer and writer on hit comedies How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off the Boat.
Original co-creator Bochco passed away in 2018, but his wife and son, Dayna and Jesse Bochco, are producers on the reboot. At this time, Kelley is not connected to the upcoming series in any way. Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar, who worked with Kang on Fresh Off the Boat, are also producing.
As a new streamer, Disney+ has many reboots out or in development, such as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which has already been picked up for a second season, and the upcoming Home Alone reboot film. Like the series based on High School Musical, the Doogie Howser, M.D. reboot looks like it could be a unique and modern adaptation, but fans will have to wait and see.
