Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn had no idea the impact the Infinity Stones would have on the MCU. Gunn was tasked with introducing the origin of the now infamous gems in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The 2014 movie was a surprise sleeper hit about a group of lesser known comic book heroes that weren't the best at being heroic and how they learned to work together as a team.
Guardians of the Galaxy introduced MCU fans to the cocky Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Gamora's sister Nebula and the fan favorite Groot. The film's central conflict largely centered around a mysterious orb that was revealed to be a powerful Infinity Stone. Guardians of the Galaxy was the first MCU film to explain the origin of the Infinity Stones. Gunn's explanation of the Infinity Stones and introduction of Thanos helped add much needed context to the central arc of the MCU going forward. Thanos wanted all of the Infinity Stones to gain control of the universe. The first Infinity Stone he acquired was the Power Stone, which was the same orb that Quill and company fought to keep from Ronan the Accuser.
Gunn agreed to a virtual Guardians of the Galaxy watch party with fans and engaged in an entertaining Q&A session on his Twitter page. Fans eagerly asked the director questions about the creative processes that went into shaping the film's overarching plot line successfully. Gunn went into detail about the origin of the Infinity Stones when one fan asked if he knew how much of an impact his ideas would have on the MCU as a whole. Check out Gunn's responses below.
Directors and writers have been utilizing Twitter as a fun way to keep fans entertained in quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic. While countless movies have been delayed due to fears over the virus, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has yet to have an official release date. Likely the highly anticipated follow up will be pushed even further back due to other MCU films being delayed. However, Gunn's Q&A's have made it fun for fans to rewatch what is now a classic MCU film. Being tasked with writing a successful film about a group of heroic jerks as well as introducing the origin of the Infinity Stones and Thanos was an immense undertaking all around. James Gunn pulled it off and made it look easy.
While there was a lot of real-life drama surrounding Gunn being fired and rehired for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Disney made the right choice of leaving the now fan-favorite Guardians in Gunn's capable hands, particularly after the lingering cliffhanger regarding Gamora in Avengers: Endgame. Ultimately what made Guardians of the Galaxy so successful wasn't the Infinity Stones or the introduction of the Big Bad of the MCU. It was the imperfect heroes at the helm, who weren't afraid to fight a bit dirty and face off with a villain via a dance-off. Watching them come together as a team was incredibly satisfying and the great soundtrack was an added bonus. It's far more satisfying to see unlikely heroes rise to the challenge of saving the galaxy. While the third movie may be a ways away, likely the premiere will be worth the wait. The Infinity Stones may have been put back in their rightful places, but there will always be some trouble in the galaxy for Peter Quill and company to sort out with heroism and well-timed sass.
