The original cast of Parks and Recreation are returning for a special reunion episode that will air next week. Following the success of Mike Schur's work on The Office, NBC doubled-down on the workplace comedy concept and became the home of Parks and Rec. The series premiered in 2009 and shortly thereafter became an incredibly popular show for the network. Audiences quickly became attached to the loveable crew of Pawnee Indiana's Parks and Recreation Department, including Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) and Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler).
Parks and Rec ran for seven seasons on NBC, closing out a successful run on the air in 2015, but fans of the series have always wanted more. Although there are always questions about a revival, the creators and cast have been hesitant to commit to returning to the show already. However, amid a global pandemic caused by coronavirus, this mindset has changed and has resulted in the creation of a special episode of Parks and Rec that will come to NBC very soon.
NBC has announced that the entire cast of Parks and Rec will return for a 30-minute special that will debut on April 30 at 8 pm EST to benefit Feeding America. The episode is based around Leslie's determined attempt to stay connected with her friends and colleagues during a time of social distancing. In addition to Poehler and Offerman returning, the special will also see Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, Jim O’Heir and Retta reprise their roles, with special guest stars also teased. "Like a lot of other people, we were looking for ways to help and felt that bringing these characters back for a night could raise some money,” said executive producer Michael Schur. “I sent a hopeful email to the cast and they all got back to me within 45 minutes. Our old ‘Parks and Rec’ team has put together one more 30-minute slice of (quarantined) Pawnee life and we hope everyone enjoys it. And donates!”
As exciting as the return of Parks and Rec is, the purpose of the special is to raise money for charities who can help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic - just as Leslie Knope would try to do. All proceeds of the special event will go to Feeding America's COVID-19 Response Fund, with sponsors State Farm and Subaru making $150,000 donations. The cast and producers of Parks and Rec, as well as NBCUniversal, have pledged $500,000 in matching donations made through May 21. Given the current state of the world, the reunion special must have been filmed over Zoom, Skype, or other video recording services.
For fans of Parks and Rec, this special should provide some insight into what has happened to the characters since the season 7 finale. The final episode of the series jumped forward to different points in the future, showing what happened to the main cast members, but this special could provide some added context and details potentially. Even if it doesn't, all that fans of Parks and Recreation should need to be satisfied with the reunion is the rare chance to see this beloved cast of characters one more time - and for a good cause.
