Season 5 of the popular teen drama, One Tree Hill, on The CW network, takes place four years after high school and all of the main characters have graduated from college and are living different, yet fulfilling lives.
Nathan and Hayley are still together, raising their son, who is now four. Lucas is with a new girl named Lindsey and has a best selling book. Brooke is a fashion mogul and Peyton has returned to Tree Hill after things don't go according to plan in Los Angeles.
10 Echoes, Silence, Patience, And Grace (8.5)
Everyone is in recovery mode after Lucas' wedding day, which should have been a happy and celebratory day, but it was actually a disaster for everyone. Hayley is still trying to get over Jamie's abduction at the hands of their crazy nanny, Carrie.
Lucas is heartbroken and goes AWOL, unable to let go of the pain Lindsey caused by leaving him at the altar. Peyton is losing hope that she and Lucas will ever be back together, especially as more time passes and Lucas is still not over Lindsey.
9 Life Is Short (8.5)
The group is celebrating Jamie's fifth birthday. Hayley and Nathan throw Jamie a party and Jamie asks if Grandpa Dan can come, but his parents say no.
Dan is out of jail and his grandson really wants to get to know him, but Hayley and Nathan don't think they can trust Dan after everything he has done. Brooke is fostering a baby named Angie who in need of heart surgery and turns to Lucas to help her with the new baby because she can't seem to get her to stop crying.
8 Cryin' Won't Help You Now (8.5)
Dan tells Nathan that his heart condition has worsened and unless he can get a new heart, he only has six months to live. Nathan relays this information to Hayley and they have to decide whether or not to allow their son, Jamie, to have a relationship with his dying grandfather, which is what Jamie really wants.
Lucas and Peyton are still trying to sort out their relationship after Lindsey left Lucas at the altar because she believed he still had feelings for Peyton.
7 Hate Is Safer Than Love (8.6)
Lucas is on a downward spiral after losing Lindsey and finding out that Lindsey is seeing someone new. At a Ravens' game, where he's now the coach, Lucas explodes on a player and assaults him, getting himself thrown out of the game, and leaving his future as a coach very uncertain.
Lucas ends up getting drunk at Tric and the next morning, when he sees Peyton, he tells her he hates her and blames her for all of the bad things that have happened to him since she came back to Tree Hill.
6 You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side (8.7)
This is the episode where Dan is finally released from jail for the murder of his brother, Keith. Upon his release, Dan is determined to bond with his grandson, which won't be easy because Hayley and Nathan don't want Jamie getting to know his grandpa too well.
Nathan and Hayley are having marital problems and as a way to help them heal, Lucas and Lindsey decide to plan their bachelor and bachelorette parties in a way that will force Nathan and Hayley to be in the same place and talk.
5 I Forgot To Remember To Forget (8.8)
Viewers finally get to see what happened in those years between the end of season 4 and the beginning of season 5. Lindsey brings Lucas a photo of him from before they met and he published his best selling book, sending Lucas down memory lane.
Peyton and Lucas are still together but they don't get their happy ending when the latter shows up in Los Angeles and proposes to the former. Peyton turns down the proposal, leaving Lucas heartbroken.
4 For Tonight You're Only Here To Know (8.8)
It's the Ravens' first basketball game of the season and Lucas is now the head coach. Peyton, Brooke, Lindsey, and Hayley plan to attend the game, but on their way to the gym, they get side-tracked when they see Mia in the school library.
They all enter the library, only to be locked in when they realize there are no handles on the inside of the library doors. With all of the women stuck together, the tension between Peyton and Lindsey finally comes to a head.
3 4 Years, 6 Months, 2 Days (9.0)
In the season 5 premiere, it's four years after graduation and Nathan, Hayley, Peyton, Brooke, and Lucas all seem to be adjusting to adulthood in one way or another. Lucas comes back to Tree Hill to write his second novel after his first one became a best seller. Peyton is in LA working as an assistant at a record label.
Brooke is in New York running her fashion line and has become a well-known fashion mogul. While Nathan is struggling after an accident that left him in a wheelchair and his basketball dreams slipped away. Hayley is doing her best to stick by her husband and raise their child, but it's hard.
2 What Comes After The Blues (9.1)
The season 5 finale has one of the biggest cliff hangers in the entire series. Lucas is finally starting to heal from his breakup with Lindsey, with a lot of help from his friends. Brooke has to give baby Angie up after Angie's surgery is a success and she is better.
Dan finds out he is first in line for a new heart, as the man who was set to receive the heart died. The end of the episode shows Dan getting hit by a car as he is paged for his new heart, and Lucas calling someone and asking them to go to Vegas with him, although the identity of that person is not revealed until the next season.
1 Hundred (9.3)
In the 100th episode of the series, Lindsey and Lucas are set to get married. Peyton struggles with what to do at the wedding: Should she confess her love to Lucas or lose him forever?
At the altar, Lindsey realizes Lucas is still in love with Peyton and rushes out of the church, leaving Lucas devastated. Meanwhile, Nanny Carrie has returned and takes Jamie from the church, kidnapping the young child and leaving his whole family in a panic while they look for him.
