Rise of Skywalker’s Babu Frik Has Some WEIRD Alternate Designs

One of the MVPs from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Babu Frik, had some pretty strange early designs. Now that The Rise of Skywalker is officially out on home release, fans have gotten to learn more about the behind the scenes process of making the last film in the Skywalker saga. In addition to the special features from the home release, The Rise of Skywalker's official novelization provided more information about the film's plot, and The Art of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has presented some of the interesting concept art that was created but never used. For example, fans have been treated to new looks at Dark Rey (Daisy Ridley), as well as Rey Force choking Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). The new reveals just keep on coming.

Babu Frik's time in The Rise of Skywalker was short, but he still left quite an impression with fans. When Rey, Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) travel to Kijimi in search of a droidsmith who can help them unlock key information in C-3PO's (Anthony Daniels) system, they're brought to Babu Frik. Fans were amused by the few lines he was able to say as well as his frankly adorable appearance. However, it turns out he could have had a very different look.

Babu Frik's early designs, as shown in The Art of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, are all incredibly varied and very different than how he came to look in the film. Some of them are a little adorable, while others (which look like insects) are much creepier. You can see some below:

The team behind The Rise of Skywalker clearly put a lot of thought into how Babu Frik should look, possibly indicating they knew how popular he could be. While Babu Frik isn't as beloved as BB-8 or Baby Yoda, he was still a fun moment in a polarizing film. Much like previous Star Wars films, The Rise of Skywalker largely divided fans through its conclusions to certain storylines and its retconning of previously established elements.

The Rise of Skywalker will probably always be controversial with fans, but there are some elements that can be remembered fondly. When it comes to its promise of fun sci-fi settings and creatures, The Rise of Skywalker seemed to deliver, though some might say a few of those settings weren't established properly. Regardless, it introduced audiences to Babu Frik and avoided using any of the creepier designs. That seems like a win.
