While The Good Place introduced Eleanor and Chidi as potential soulmates, Jason and Janet were never supposed to be a couple at all. Michael had initially placed Eleanor and Chidi together, knowing that their opposite personalities would make each other crazy.
However, rather than being torture, Chidi and Eleanor became trustworthy friends and a team devoted to turning Eleanor around to understand where she had gone wrong on Earth. Meanwhile, Jason and Janet's relationship was based on total acceptance of who the other person was. Both couples grew throughout the series, and each was as unlikely as they could get. Yet, each pair always made it work.
10 Eleanor And Chidi: He Taught Her Ethics
Eleanor was in for a rude awakening when it became apparent that she was not the same as everyone else in the neighborhood. Trying to help Eleanor stay, Chidi agreed to teach Eleanor ethics so that she could earn her place.
Chidi wanted Eleanor to be able to stay and did all he could to teach her about various ethics professors and ideologies. During the numerous reboots, every time Eleanor came to Chidi to ask for help, Chidi agreed. Chidi never gave up on Eleanor or believed she could not comprehend the material.
9 Jason And Janet: She Accepted Him Entirely
Jason was not the smartest guy around. He often had childish tendencies and was not the most reliable to get the group out of trouble. However, for Janet, Jason was always perfect the way he was. Janet never needed or wanted Jason to be anything other than himself.
While Jason may have annoyed the others by being unaware of circumstance, Janet was always happy to help him out and explain to Jason the situation. This was a vast difference in comparison to Tahani, who had not been immediately on board with who Jason Mendoza was at first.
8 Eleanor And Chidi: She Listened To Him
Eleanor did not listen to many people. Her entire time on Earth, Eleanor ignored basic instructions for the sake of herself. When Michael prevented her initial death, Eleanor tried to be a better person, and it worked for a while. Except, her chosen path was not enough of a driving force to motivate Eleanor to do good continually.
For that, Eleanor needed Chidi. She was fascinated by Chidi's lecture that Eleanor found online and was so immersed in it that she flew to Australia to speak with Chidi about helping her self-improve.
7 Jason And Janet: He Let Her Feel
Janet was not a girl or a robot. Her existence was meant to help the residents of the neighborhoods. Yet, Jason and Janet connected in other ways, helping each other to understand a variety of things. The more times Janet was rebooted, the more advanced she became.
Janet's mental and emotional connections got more potent, as did her feelings for Jason. Jason never saw anything wrong with Janet and was happy to see her feel emotions. Their relationship allowed Janet a more significant understanding of the range of human emotions and feelings.
6 Eleanor And Chidi: Chidi Was Patient
Although Eleanor wanted Chidi's help, she was still Eleanor. She made jokes in the middle of his lectures and sometimes zoned out. Amongst all the interruptions, Chidi remained patient with Eleanor, determined that she would understand his teachings.
Chidi was later proven correct as throughout their time together, Eleanor grasped ethics and philosophy, becoming a better person as she understood various concepts. Chidi's patience did them both well. It also allowed Chidi to understand Eleanor better as he watched and listened to her. Even if he did not agrees with her examples, Chidi could see where Eleanor was coming from.
5 Jason And Janet: They Supported Each Other
Jason knew his time in the Good Place had reached an end when he completed the perfect game of Madden. Janet knew the second she saw Jason that something was different and that he was ready. While sad that their time together was concluding, Janet was supportive of Jason's decision.
Knowing he was leaving, Jason told Eleanor and Chidi that he was okay with Janet moving on. Jason wanted her to be happy, and if she found someone else, Jason was alright with her pursuing it. Jason understood that Janet may be interested in someone else in the future and wanted to be supportive of her.
4 Eleanor And Chidi: They Didn't Have To Fall In Love To Be Close
Eleanor and Chidi were not always paired up as soulmates. Throughout the eight-hundred and three neighborhoods, Chidi and Eleanor always had some form of a dynamic. Chidi always helped Eleanor every time she asked. However, it was not specified that Eleanor and Chidi fell in love during every reboot.
Sometimes, they were just friends, but they were always close. Eleanor and Chidi relied on each other and were there for each other. The status of their relationship did not have to matter. Eleanor and Chidi did fall in love several times, but that did not need to be the way their relationship always worked.
3 Jason And Janet: He Waited For Her
On Earth, Jason had been rash and impulsive. His form of torture involved him being a monk, sentenced to silence. While Jason never enjoyed being quiet, that ended up being his last lesson before walking through the door. Realizing the bracelet he had for Janet was missing, Jason searched for it.
However, as Janet had already left Jason to walk through the door, Jason was alone when he found the bracelet. Jason waited many Jeremy Bearimies for Janet to return so he could give it to her. As he waited, Jason silently observed his surroundings, learning the patience he did not have on Earth.
2 Eleanor And Chidi: They Made Each Other Better
Chidi did not just help Eleanor become a better person; she helped him as well. Chidi's relationship with Eleanor allowed Chidi to see things more clearly. As he looked at the story of their lives, Chidi saw how much longer Eleanor's was than his, how much more she had done.
Chidi's anxiety prevented him from many things, but with Eleanor's help, Chidi was able to see beyond the constant flow of questions and see that the world was not as black and white as he saw it. When Chidi was ready to leave, Eleanor realized that she had to let him. Their impact on each other was never one-sided.
1 Jason And Janet: Jason Knew When It Wasn't Janet
Whenever anyone called Janet a girl or a robot, she would correct them. Janet was neither of those things and always made sure to inform people of that. When Janet did not correct in season four, Jason knew that it was not Janet. Jason had paid attention and knew the quirks Janet had and identified the types of things she would say.
Everyone else was focused on trying to determine if Michael was himself instead of Vicky in a Michael suit. The reveal that Janet was Bad Janet sends Jason and Michael on a quest to rescue Janet from the Bad Place.
