The Suicide Squad director James Gunn says the film's release date is not changing as of right now. As most people are well aware, the coronavirus pandemic has caused virtually all of Hollywood to shut down indefinitely, leaving an unprecedented impact on the entertainment industry. The immediate effects pertain to the numerous 2020 movies that have been pushed back to later release dates, but the health crisis has also forced studios to shut down projects that were in-production when things took a turn for the worse. That means movies planned to premiere in 2021, like The Batman and The Matrix 4, may need to be postponed.
One of the more anticipated titles scheduled for 2021 is Gunn's The Suicide Squad, followup (it's unclear if it's a sequel or reboot) to the 2016 blockbuster. With all the uncertainty surrounding numerous movies and TV shows currently, some fans might have been wondering if The Suicide Squad was one of the many films affected by the spread of COVID-19. Fortunately, it appears Gunn's latest is still on track, for the time being.
On Twitter, Gunn was asked about the impact of the widespread delays. While the question was geared towards upcoming Marvel movies (like Guardians of the Galaxy 3), Gunn confirmed The Suicide Squad remains "on schedule." Check out his post in the space below:
The Suicide Squad wrapped principal photography in February, so by sheer luck of timing it finished up that big step right before coronavirus became a massive concern. Currently, The Suicide Squad isn't due in theaters until August 2021, meaning Gunn and company have plenty of time to lock final picture. It's possible the visual effects team will be able to work from home; even if they're limited in what they can do out of the office, they could still get some things done so they don't fall behind. James Cameron's Avatar 2 is still conducting its virtual production during this time of social distancing, while live-action filming is on hold. Theoretically, other projects could follow that blueprint and get as much accomplished as they can. Obviously, that doesn't hold true for every movie (Minions: The Rise of Gru was delayed because Illumination couldn't finish it on time), but fingers crossed The Suicide Squad is in a similar position to Avatar 2.
Of course, the key phrase in Gunn's comment is "as of now," implying things could change down the line. Like most major studio tentpoles, The Suicide Squad probably set time aside for the standard additional photography in its schedule, and whether or not that takes place when it's supposed to will depend on when it's safe to resume normal business operations. The thought was the delayed productions could start up again in mid-May, but that window is deemed too optimistic. Again, isn't debuting until next August, so hopefully it will be able to stay on track and make its release date without any problems.
