Netflix's Too Hot To Handle has already become a huge hit internationally. However, Matthew has made a splash in reality TV before but it's hard to believe this is the same person, and not just because his hair got longer.
On Too Hot To Handle a group of sexy singles is paid to be on an island and not have sex. This premise proved to be too much for many of the singles but one of the stronger willed cast members was model Matthew Smith. Often referred to as Jesus because of his look. But there was more to his look than just the long hair. He came on the show with a very specific wise sage in a beanie persona. He had a specific look and attitude. In his intro, he said, "I'm a deep thinker. I think about everything a lot." And he wore a beanie. He wore a beanie to a tropical beach. This gives you a clear idea of who he is.
This was a complete 180 from the person reality TV fans remember from America's Next Top Model cycle 21. During America's Next Top Model, Matthew came on with a fairly distinct lack of style. As a matter of fact he was super excited to win one of the first challenges because it involved picking their own clothing and he said that Tyra told him he was very boring and that boring and vanilla were things he heard a lot. He was worried about not being memorable. So I'm guessing this might have played a role in helping him cultivate a look, bcause his look was definitely unique on that beach.
There were other changes to his appearance as well. He went from a very traditional short haircut to his now long flowing locks that he conveniently whips around at precisely the right moment for full effect. In his first round of reality TV he wasn't quite as buff as we saw on the new bingeworthy Netflix reality TV show. He also was clean-shaven during the modeling competition. This made him look less intense and a little more wholesome, but his entire image was more wholesome.
The most memorable thing for many was that he smiled all the time. During the first week of the show, they had to create a hashtag that would describe them. Matthew's was #smilesallday. That actually did fit the Matthew from America's Next Top Model but wouldn't be quite appropriate for new "deep thinker" Matthew. Some things, however, did stay the same. He has always been crazy attractive and always been very comfortable with his sexuality. Matthew has definitely gone through a rebranding. Fans of Too Hot To Handle should definitely check out cycle 21 of America's Next Top Model for more Matthew.
Too Hot to Handle season 1 is available now to stream on Netflix.
