Broadchurch: 10 Best Episodes, Ranked According To IMDb

Viewers these days like to do their homework before committing to a series, and with the availability of sites like IMDb, this has become extremely easy. A lot of fans of Doctor Who love to check out Broadchurch, as a number of actors from the former can be found in this show, with some humorously calling it an extended universe.

That would be selling Broadchurch short, though, since the series is very much worthy of standing out on its own. Still, audiences do deserve to know what they’re getting in for and the IMDb scores of Broadchurch episodes do a fair job at reflecting the strongest episodes. That said, here are 10 of the highest-rated episodes according to the site.

10 Series 1: Episode 1 - 8.3

Ellie Miller is robbed of her chance of a promotion when Alec Hardy takes over the leadership of the police force. His arrival is marred, however, when the discovery of the body of a child at the beach throws the town of Broadchurch into chaos.

Here’s where the series began, and it happened to feature some highlights that fans remember to this day. The performances of the cast are the strongest point out of the premiere, although there is the feeling that more exposition could have been handed out.

9 Series 2: Episode 1 - 8.3

The town is rocked when Danny’s killer pleads as not guilty during oath, beginning a battle in the courtroom as both parties recruit hard-hitting lawyers with checkered pasts of their own. Alec Hardy confesses to Ellie the reason he came to Broadchurch, as a personal case opens up.

Those attached to the original storyline will no doubt remain interested, especially with that enormous bombshell within the opening seconds. However, it’s Hardy’s case that is easily the more mysterious, with his and Miller’s main involvement related to this one.

8 Series 1: Episode 6 - 8.4

The death of Jack caused by the town’s incessant bullying of him causes Reverend Coates to accuse them as being a direct factor in his demise. Hardy puts Coates in his suspect list after noticing a few odd behaviors, while the latter makes some discoveries of his own.

After putting Coates out of view for most of the season, this episode does a great job of highlighting Arthur Darvill’s talents as an actor. Along with that, it provides an additional viewpoint, both good and bad in nature as the impact of making unproven judgments are felt.

7 Series 3: Episode 1 - 8.4

The temporary cooldown in criminal activities in Broadchurch is brought to a screeching halt as a woman admits to being sexually assaulted. With such a heinous act being uncommon in the town, Hardy and Miller begin their investigations to catch the culprit.

It’s a welcome change from all the legal drama that Series 2 was about, with this premiere putting focus on the chemistry between the leads. It brings in a new style of extended scenes that are built around dialogues, which serves to be a good refresh for the show.

6 Series 1: Episode 5 - 8.5

When an article is published about Jack’s past crime over his relationship with a minor, the townsfolk instantly brand him as the killer. Despite being innocent until proven guilty, Jack is mercilessly vandalized to the point of another tragedy striking Broadchurch.

It’s one of those episodes that are particularly hard to stomach, as the reality of mob mentality is laid out here. It also serves to be a reminder that the characters on the show are far from perfect, with even the best ones having unlikable traits. However, the human nature of the episode is what makes it so interesting.

5 Series 3: Episode 6 - 8.6

The identity of Trish’s attacker seems close to being uncovered when a close friend is apprehended for making a violent expression of love for her. Meanwhile, Mark finally gets to confront Joe after tracking him down, although the result of their encounter is something else entirely.

While Series 3 didn’t focus on Danny’s death as a main plot, this episode did serve as a finale of sorts to that angle. Mark’s bold move serves to be cathartic in many ways, and the heating up of the main storyline is another hook for viewers.

4 Series 3: Episode 8 - 8.6

Hardy and Miller are able to finally uncover who the person was behind Trish’s assault, but are startled by the discovery of facts even they couldn’t have predicted. Finally, each plot thread is closed down as the residents of Broadchurch seek to move on.

In the series finale, fans get to have almost all their questions answered, although the main villains’ attitude certainly does leave a sour taste in the mouth. However, Alec’s bold move to protect his daughter and friends do make for a heartwarming send-off, confirming the acting quality of David Tennant as a cut above the rest.

3 Series 1: Episode 7 - 8.7

As the vice grips tighter around the identity of Danny’s killer, Hardy finds himself blackmailed by the press due to his illness becoming apparent. The marriage of Beth and Mark seems truly on the rocks, while a shocking accusation is made against Nigel.

It takes a different approach than most other shows, as Broadchurch’s penultimate episode of the first series brings family drama as a parallel to the mystery behind the killer. In a great show of storytelling, the culprit is apprehended in a way fans would never expect.

2 Series 2: Episode 8 - 8.7

The fate of Joe Miller hangs in the balance as the series' long case finally comes to a close. After the heartbreaking decision of the court, the people of Broadchurch decide to take matters into their own hands. Meanwhile, Hardy’s own case culminates in a startling confession.

Most fans remain bitter about the lack of justice provided here, which is perfectly valid as Broadchurch took a very bold approach. However, the big plus point is how Hardy’s case is wrapped up very fairly, with interesting facts of the case being presented to fully shape the scene of the crime.

1 Series 1: Episode 8 - 9.1

The identity of Danny’s killer turns out to be the last person anyone would expect, and the reveal sends those closely connected into complete shock. While the mystery of the circumstances behind the killing are finally apparent, the motive turns out to be very disturbing in nature.

Full credit to the cast for playing up each scene beautifully, with the Series 1 finale unloading a whirlwind of emotions. The overall reveal of the killer is something that is both unpredictable and disturbing, yet hardly anyone can claim to be left unsatisfied by this remarkable turn of events.
