Grace Hanson is the martini-loving go-getter from Netflix's Grace and Frankie. Unlike her former enemy and current best friend, Frankie, Grace is business-minded, logical, and forceful. Throughout the show's six seasons (season 7 most likely coming in 2021), Grace has transformed from a cold and lifeless matriarch to a caring force of nature.
Between her and Frankie, Grace has evolved completely but that doesn't always mean for the better. There are some moments where Grace hasn't learned a thing and falls back on old behaviors. She's lucky to have Frankie to balance her darker moments, but these 10 examples show that Grace got worse and worse as the show went on.
10 Continues To Take Advantage Of Frankie's Ideas
One of Grace's biggest problems is that she doesn't take Frankie's ideas seriously until she hits rock bottom. Frankie is a zany free-spirit who jabbers about dreams and ideas all the time, which is why she's not taken seriously by many people. Sadly, Grace is one of those people. All of Grace and Frankie's business ventures have started with Frankie's creativity. Her homemade lubricant was judged by Grace but she ended up giving the idea to Brianna when she was in trouble with Say Grace. Likewise, Frankie was also the one who came up with both the vibrator idea. Grace's business-oriented mindset made them happen but they're all the brainwork from Frankie. You'd think by the time
9 Repeats The Same Mistakes With Nick That She Made With Robert
In the sixth season, Grace was already having trouble in her marriage to Nick. She vented to Frankie, who ended up being the mirror Grace didn't want to face. Instead of having an honest and open discussion with Nick over their sex life, she kept thinks to herself. Just like in her marriage to Robert, Grace was keeping her happiness and her needs hidden out of embarrassment.
8 Seems To Enjoy Being A Bad Mother
Viewers learn quickly that Grace isn't the best mother. Both Mallory and Brianna are self-sufficient and strong women but they definitely have their mother-daughter issues. Unlike most shows on television, Grace doesn't try to be a softer, more understanding mother. She even makes light of the fact that she isn't a great mom.
Mallory and Brianna may have great lives but Grace is constantly undermining them, taking their shine, and making them feel like they're not good enough. What's worse is she always has reasoning for her actions instead of just apologizing or listening. Even though Grace shows flickers of remorse at times, her bad parenting has gotten worse over the years.
7 No One Liked Grace Transforming Into A Trophy Wife
Grace and Frankie fans find it troubling that Grace turned into Nick's trophy wife in the sixth season. After divorcing Robert and retiring from Say Grace, Grace took some much needed time and effort transforming into a new and improved #BossLady. But after she married Nick, it's almost as if this sassy and successful businesswoman is reduced to being her husband's arm candy. We see this happen at the charity function Nick and Grace attend. Nick even scolds Grace into apologizing to another "trophy wife" for being too harsh.
6 Choosing Nick Over Frankie Was Hard To See
If Grace was going to marry anyone, fans were hoping it would be her ex-lover Phil. However, Nick was a great second option. Their age gap may have bothered Grace, but they were a perfect fit. Nevertheless, it was hard seeing her move on with another man and leave Frankie behind.
Grace and Frankie were a gutsy duo who were amazing together. Would it have been so horrible if both Grace and Frankie stayed single and relied on each other? It's understandable that both wanted a life-partner, but fans were hoping both women were enough for each other.
5 Why Did She Get Married Again?!
Grace evolved so much from season 1. She wasn't the cold-hearted robot she first appeared to be; she was now warm and helpful. With all this progress being made, it's annoying that she felt compelled to get married again — especially after the disaster that was her first marriage. Being a life partner to Nick without the marriage certificate seems like something Grace would have preferred. Heck, she didn't even want to tell her children or family that she and Nick tied the knot. If she was that embarrassed or shy about it, why did she go through with it anyway? And how could she allow herself to be convinced by Nick?
4 Does Grace Have A Handle On Her Drinking?
Everyone Grace knows seems to joke about her drinking or her love for a dry martini. Through a divorce, fights with Frankie, and disagreements with her kids, Grace always has her signature cocktail to fall back on. And while seeing her upend an entire bottle of vodka into a watermelon was hilarious, her drinking seemed to get worse as the seasons went by. Under the influence, she drove a scooter around a home improvement store and crashed into a cop car; she drunkenly stole a scent from a rivaling company and then tried to sue them; and then she ignores help from Taneth when she lies about her drinking problem. In season 1 it was humorous enough, but by season 6, fans wonder if Grace really needs help.
3 Grace Is A Bona Fide Liar
The reason why Grace finds herself in so many hang-ups is because she's a blatant liar. Whenever she's trying to cover her tracks, she lies. She'll even lie for Frankie if she finds herself in trouble. Grace's lies are funny in the moment but they always catch up to her. She lied about having a gun in the house, about loving tennis or eating subs, and she lies to Jack to cover for Frankie. If Grace wants to fully transform, she needs to cut back on both the booze and the lies.
2 Does Grace Want Frankie To Find Someone Else?
Before Frankie started dating Jack, she was hot and heavy with Jacob. In fact, Jacob seemed like the perfect match for Frankie. He handled her wild spirit, grew organic yams, and had the same common interests as her. He never tried to trap Frankie; he only wanted to see her grow.
It was shocking that Grace wasn't more supportive of this couple. Could this be because she couldn't handle Frankie being with someone while she was single? If that's the case, Grace is more spiteful than we thought.
1 Super Judgmental
Everyone is allowed to have their judgments, but Grace takes it too far. She judges Nick's friends for having younger wives (and then judges the young wives for being *gasp!* young). She loathed going to Frankie's wellness getaway and judged those who sought help in that style. She even judged the woman in the elevator who was going to see Nick, simply because she was gorgeous and Nick was single.
Grace pushes people away and acts superior when she doesn't understand them. In many ways, Grace has changed a lot over six seasons, but some old habits, like being cold and judgmental, die hard. As a woman in her eighties, Grace can do better than that.
