Justice League's Darkseid Actor Isn't Bitter Marvel Debuted Thanos First

Ray Porter, who will play Darkseid in the Snyder Cut of Justice League has shared his feelings about Marvel debuting Thanos first. Thanos is the definitive big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, responsible for wiping out half of all existence at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Beyond that, he's responsible for the deaths of several Marvel heroes, including Black Widow, Iron Man, Vision, and Gamora. Thanos is imperative to the satisfying conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, as well as the Infinity Saga as a whole.

Darkseid, however, hasn't received the same treatment. The DC Comics character was expected to be a big part of Zack Snyder's Justice League. However, the character was pared down over time and eventually cut from the final film altogether. Luckily, Darkseid remains in the Snyder Cut of Justice League, which will debut on HBO Max next year. Snyder has previously revealed photos of Darkseid and confirmed that Porter completed all of his scenes for the film.

Thanos made his MCU debut in Guardians of the Galaxy, but his first full appearance didn't come until Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. This means that if Darkseid had appeared in Justice League, DC would have beaten Marvel to the punch. This would have been fitting, as Thanos was actually inspired by Darkseid in the comics. While speaking with TheFilmJunkee, Porter discussed the timing of Thanos' MCU debut and his feelings on it. First joking, "Give me that Gauntlet, shut up," Porter then revealed his admiration for Josh Brolin's performance. However, he also admitted:

You know, it was kind of a drag that there was a big bad in the Avengers movie and there isn't the same, like, level of big bad I guess. I mean, you could kind of say Steppenwolf, I don't know, maybe not. But yeah, I mean... I didn't dance around the room, I'll say that. I also wasn't broken up by it. I wasn't angered by it or anything like that.

Porter's comments make sense, especially considering his non-existent role in the final version of Justice League. If Darkseid had at least appeared in the movie, the debut of Thanos might have been easier to swallow. However, Porter's reveal seems to stem more from wanting Justice League to have been the best movie it could be rather than his personal feelings. Many DC Extended Universe fans have expressed a similar sentiment, especially when it comes to Steppenwolf as a big bad vs Thanos.

Of course, Porter likely feels better about the situation now that he knows fans will see him in Snyder's version of Justice League. Now that Thanos' time in the MCU is over, Darkseid and Porter will have a chance to shine. However, fans will have to wait until 2021 to see how the two villains compare.
