HBO's Run: 10 Funniest Quotes from the First Season | ScreenRant

The show Run, HBO's new comedy from a team of Vicky Jones, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Domhnall Gleeson, and Merritt Wever, just wrapped up its first season. While a second season potentially hangs in the balance, fans will at least have had the thrillingly romantic and always unpredictable first arc of the show.

While the primary focus on the show was on the torrid, forbidden, escapist romance between Ruby and Billy, there were also plenty of laughs to be had from the situation. A bit of an edgier comedy, Run had a ton of quotes that had viewers rolling. It's a testament to the clever writing of the show.

10 Aisle Or Window

In the first episode of Run, when Ruby arrives at the airport to purchase a plane ticket, she goes back and forth with the airline clerk about whether she wants an aisle seat or a window seat. Ultimately, the only thing she's certain of is that she doesn't want a middle seat.

When the clerk begins to get confused, Ruby explodes, "Don't ask me any questions! Just give me a g****** ticket!" Not only is Wever's delivery of the line hilarious, but the clerk's reaction cements it as a great moment.

9 Pursuit

Further into the first episode of Run, Billy and Ruby reconnect, and Ruby immediately harkens back to a memory of college. She recalls when Billy mixed up the word "pursuit" for the word "therefore." Then, she says, "You went around baffling people saying, 'Pursuit, we should probably conclude.'"

It's not just a very amusing mix-up and line reading. It's also a summative insight into Billy's character. In one memory, Ruby tells the audience everything they need to know about Billy.

8 Malarkey

In Run's third episode, Billy takes to a Chicago bank to preemptively withdraw funds from his account. When he meets Sean, the bank teller, his accent immediately enamors the money man.

After reading that Sean likes his Irish accent, Billy leans into it. Gleeson throws out an exaggerated pronunciation of "malarkey" while also telling Sean, "That's a very Irish name you got there." The joy in Sean's face is infectious.

7 Dirty Room

In the second episode of Run, Ruby does her best to seduce a stranger on the train in an attempt to make Billy jealous. Of course, Ruby does not quite have her fastball with her and, as a result, her flirting attempts go right over the guy's head.

"Well, not if it's dirty," is the man's response to Ruby trying to entice him back to her private room on the train. Of course, he had a different interpretation of what a dirty room means than Ruby intended.

6 Badger

Phoebe Waller-Bridge was not only a producer on Run. She also played the character of Laurel, who gives Billy and Ruby a ride and ends up embroiled in the investigation surrounding them.

When Laurel is first introduced, her tendencies as a taxidermist are on full display. Regarding a dead badger that she has her eye on, she says, "I'd say she's completely dead." The juxtaposition of Waller-Bridge's deadpan delivery with the insanity that Ruby and Billy just endured makes it a very amusing moment.

5 Karaoke

Laurel is a recurring character on Run and in the penultimate episode of the season, she sings a karaoke version of "I Will Always Love You" at the local bar, the Thirsty Cactus. Her performance is very subdued and high-pitched and it's hard to even hear it.

When she finishes, the MC walks to the stage to encourage the applause for Laurel. However, he also throws in the line, "Great to nearly hear you again." It's a delightful little barb.

4 Small Town

After the questionable murder case that Ruby and Billy find themselves involved in, they begin to have dissenting opinions about whether they should or should not be seen. Eventually, Ruby needs to use the bathroom and Billy tells her to use the woods to avoid being seen in a real bathroom.

Wever once again uncorks a brilliant, exasperated line delivery when she yells, "I don't care who sees me! I'm innocent and I have my period!" It's been a rough couple days for Ruby, but lines like these help her release some tension.

3 Needy Blonde

When Laurel speaks with Babe, the investigating police officer, she describes Billy and Ruby as "a needy blonde and a guy in a woman's coat."

Obviously, the fans know way more about these two, but it's also a pretty efficient way of summing them up. The line is made funnier by the fact that Laurel and Babe are discussing this in the Thirsty Cactus. No part of the investigation was conventional.

2 Ginger Kids

Continuing the barrage of excellent lines that came from this penultimate episode, "Tell," Ruby and Billy begin to have a bit of a deep talk about their regrets with their relationship. Ruby brings up the point that she thinks Billy is upset she has kids.

He counters by saying, "I'm upset you didn't have my kids." It's a poignant moment that is immediately cut with the excellent line, "I didn't want ginger kids." It might just be Run's best quote.

1 Jealousy

One of the best parts of Wever's electric performance is how frustrated she becomes with Billy's slightly mean quips and how she can't help but love him in spite of them. This frustration often manifests in physical outbursts that are hilarious.

The best of them comes in the finale of Run when Ruby apologizes for never watching one of Billy's famous speeches. She says, "I was jealous." To this, Billy responds, "I know." He's being facetious, but he also means it a little bit. Ruby cannot help but grin, slap the bed, and grit, "A******." It's a hysterical moment in a great HBO show.
