The upcoming Marvel's Avengers is coming to PS5 and it will be free to those who have already bought it on PS4. Marvel's Avengers is an action RPG that stars a version of the team that has split up, following the destruction of San Francisco and the demise of Captain America. The team reforms with the aid of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in order to uncover the truth behind the events that led to them disbanding.
The recent PS5 conference featured huge game eveals, including showing the system for the first time. There are some games that will receive updated ports on the PlayStation 5 (like Grand Theft Auto V), but there are still some games being released over the next few months that are expected to receive enhanced editions on PS5. Sony is fine with some PS4 games being free on PS5, but it's up to the discretion of each publisher to make that call.
A post on the official PlayStation Blog by Crystal Dynamics chief technology officer Gary Snethen has revealed that Marvel's Avengers is coming to PlayStation 5 with a number of graphical and performance enhancements. Snethen has also announced that people who purchase Marvel's Avengers on PlayStation 4 (on either physical or digital) will receive the PlayStation 5 version of the game for free, with all of its upgrades intact.
Snethen also revealed that the PlayStation 5 version of Marvel's Avengers will be released alongside the system. This means that the PlayStation 5 has added a major title to its launch line-up, even if it's not an exclusive. There are only a few short months between the worldwide current generation release of Marvel's Avengers and the launch of the PS5, so this could be a smart move on the part of Crystal Dynamics. There are no guarantees that the PlayStation 5 will ship a lot of consoles at launch, so there is a lot more sense in promoting the PlayStation 4 version of the game to over a hundred million people, and avoid risking losing any customers who are planning on waiting for the next-gen version of the title.
This marks the first time that a PlayStation 5 game will be adopting the Smart Delivery model used by Microsoft for the Xbox line of systems. Smart Delivery is a feature that allows all games bought on Xbox One systems to receive any upgraded versions on Xbox Series X free of charge. If Marvel's Avengers is just the first of many similar Smart Delivery-style deals for PlayStation systems, then this could give it the edge it needs to beat the Xbox Series X during the upcoming console war.
Marvel's Avengers will be released for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on September 4, 2020. The PlayStation 5 version of the game will be released when the system launches during the holiday 2020 season.
