Rick & Morty's Season 4 Finale Hides A NEW Squanchy | Screen Rant

As another season of Rick and Morty has come and gone, it was a surprise to see Squanchy return in the season finale. The Rick and Morty season 4 finale, "Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri", brings back several plot threads to the forefront. It addresses the long-answered question to Beth's identity as a clone or not from season 3; the climatic reunions with fan-favorite characters, such as Tammy and Phoenixperson; and the set up for Rick's current position with the family dynamic moving into the next season. Besides all these exciting elements, one very important individual makes their biggest appearance yet.

The widely-known Squanchy became a fan-favorite since his first appearance in the Rick and Morty season 1 episode "Ricksy Business", as he attends a party at the Smith family home. Reappearing a handful of times through the series, his uncertain fate at the end of the season 2 finale, "The Wedding Squanchers", left fans speculating about his eventual return. Squanchy did make a minor cameo in the season 4 premiere, "Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat", as one of Rick's possible death outcomes where Rick is seemingly ripped in half by a potentially Federation-controlled Squanchy. This could hint at a return for the future, as this event has yet to pass, since it's still unknown whether Squanchy survived his fight with Tammy or not.

In actuality, the Rick and Morty season 4 finale brings back the well-known and beloved Squanchy, but in a different form. This new Squanchy appears briefly behind Space Beth in the finale's opening scene. In fact, this new alien just so happens to be a female member of Squanchy's species, a first within the universe of Rick and Morty. Upon enacting her rebellion, Space Beth, the original Beth that appears to initially be the Beth from season 3, has a Squanchy of her own. Her "heroic phase", described by Rick later in the episode, has garnered her ragtag group of rebel comrades similar to that of Rick's. If this female Squanchy reappears anytime soon, she could be presented as the daughter of Squanchy, and the show could have both daughters of Rick and Squanchy carry the torch as the next generation of intergalactic rebels.

Following the whole Star Wars reference surrounding the episode, this unnamed female Squanchy sadly doesn't have any speaking lines, but she has ties to another Stars Wars character within another uncanny species: Yoda. In the Star Wars movies, Yoda was the first instance of someone from his species, but then audiences were introduced to a female character of his race in the prequels: Yaddle. Both races seem to have this sense of mystery around them as their species' names, history, and even presence through the galaxy are missing. The infrequent appearances of other individuals of Yoda's species as well as Squanchy’s provide slight but thought-provoking insight into the social culture and mannerisms they both possess.

It's currently unknown when Rick and Morty fans will see Squanchy again. Yet, if these little Easter eggs at the beginning and end of this season are anything to go by, it may be possible that creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon are planning to bring another longtime friend of Rick Sanchez back into the series. As the set up for season 5 alludes to Rick's demotion in his family, he seeks validation and self-worth through his longtime friends now more than ever.
