5 Best Sci-Fi Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst) | ScreenRant

There is a myth about science-fiction movies that only nerds dig the genre. It is simply not true. If the movie has a decent plot, a touch of intrigue or suspense throughout, and a brilliant climax, everyone loves it.

Unfortunately, more often than not, sci-fi movies tend to have predictable angles and ridiculous climaxes. If you live for sci-fi, be ready for some intense juicy bits about some of the lamest endings. If you don't like sci-fi, well, allow us to burst your bubble and introduce you to some of the best climaxes and thereby, the best movies ever.

10 Worst: 2012

Theorists have been predicting the end of the world for decades. Lots of the theories do sound interesting, for example, the premise of the disaster movie 2012. But, the movie failed to manage a proper execution or a decent climax. 2012 came out in 2009 and it revolved around a writer who is struggling to keep his family alive through a series of disasters. The idea of saving only the 1% was another lame idea other than the sloppy climax (because conveniently, the world did not end).

9 Best: Interstellar

Christopher Nolan film Interstellar is a masterpiece. Humanity is at stake because the Earth is getting uninhabitable due to crop blight and Dust Bowls. An ex-Nasa employee and currently farmer, Cooper sets out, with a team, to find potential habitable planets and to repopulate the human kind.

The movie is very beautifully made and is a delight to savor. The ending especially will melt your heart, every time you watch it.

8 Worst: Replicas

An unsatisfactory amalgam of multiple genres, Replicas is officially a science fiction thriller. A brilliant scientist Will Foster is carrying out an experiment of downloading a dead soldier's mind into a robot. Unfortunately, after a boating trip, his wife and children die in a car accident. Foster illegally uses his work equipment to copy his family into clones. The climax shows Foster and his clone selling replicas as after-lives for wealthy people. The only best thing about Replicas is Keanu Reeves.

7 Best: A Space Odyssey

Legendary movie A Space Odyssey deals with human existence, evolution. It is a perfect balance of all these themes. With an accurate depiction of science, imagery and special effects, it has achieved an exclusive fan following and iconic status over time. Although the movie lacks dialogue, it makes up for it with a beautiful score and brilliant storytelling. The climax is a wonderful closure packed with food for thought and ambiguity. This movie is a gem and not to be missed at all.

6 Worst: Armageddon

Armageddon like other stereotypical sci-fi movies follows the rule of physics only when it suits the plot. Ridden with occasional plot holes and logical errors, Armageddon received mixed response. Some fans called it terrible, while others loved the movie. Regardless, the climax is extremely predictable. Harry sacrifices himself to save the world. The earth is saved and AJ and Grace get married.

5 Best: The Matrix

Game-changer of the 2000s, The Matrix is an absolute delight. Jam packed with action, it retains the intrigue throughout the air time. One of the best villains so far, Agent Smith offers occasional bits of dark humor along with action which help in keeping the audience hooked.

The movie is about a dystopian world, where the Artificial Intelligence has taken over the world and subdued the whole human population, in a virtual reality system called the Matrix. The climax does not let the series lose any pace and the movie ends on a cliff hanger.

4 Worst: Vanilla Sky

Science fiction is blended with psychological thriller, romance and alternate reality in Vanilla Sky. The movie is a curious mixture of a lot of intriguing ideas, loosely tied with each other. David Aames is a playboy. He has inherited his father’s publishing company recently. The rest of the story unveils itself in the form of lucid dreams, reality warps and what not. Though the dreamy mood of the film is a delight, the overall plot and the climax fail to impress.

3 Best: Blade Runner

Timeless movie Blade Runner is one of the best science fiction movies ever made. The movie spins around a dystopian future, where corporations have built synthetic bio-engineered humans/replicants, to work on the space colonies.

Deckard is a trained cop, assigned to hunt and kill rebellious replicants. Embellished with a taut and flawless storyline, the movie has arguably the best climax ever, out of all the science fiction movies so far. Whether Deckard is a replicant (android) or not, is s still a matter of speculation, of course. After all this time!

2 Worst: Hollow Man

Horror science fiction Hollow Man failed to impress critics or the masses. Although the team had done pretty great job on the special effects, the Hollow Man ended up being an average horror movie rather than a sci-fi! Sebastian Caine is a scientist who has developed an invisibility serum. He experiments the serum on himself and later finds it difficult to reverse the effect. A boring story, predictable plot and almost slapdash climax made this movie terrible.

1 Best: Inception

Mind bending science fiction Inception, is the masterpiece of Nolan. Imagined, written, and directed by Nolan himself, this movie is an intense story of Dominick Cobb, who earns his living by corporate espionage through a military technology of infiltrating and accessing his target’s subconscious mind, in a dream. At the end of the day, Cobb longs to reunite with his children, but, his criminal history does not allow him to do so. Inception has the best climax any movie has ever been blessed with. Is the totem still spinning or did it fall off?
