Who is the best Captain from all of the franchises on Below Deck? Die-hard fans love to argue their favorite between Captain Lee, Captain Sandy, and now, Captain Glen. The decision comes down to a few main points, but we think the winner is obvious.
The Bravo franchises follow around the filthy rich as they charter superyachts through the wide-open waters of different locations. The film crew gets up close and personal with the drama that goes on below deck with the boat crew and their shenanigans. As the 150-foot yacht island-hops throughout the seasons, each episode features a different group of guests who allow viewers to watch the crew scurry around trying to make five-star meals and turndown service look like a piece of cake. There is heartbreak, drunken nights, and quitters along the way but fans would not give up this maritime franchise for the world.
The original Below Deck premiered back in 2013 with Captain Lee Rosbach at the wheel. The Floridan comes across as a bit gruff but did soften with each episode that went by. But fans should never mistake his kindness for weakness since he has no problem firing a crew member right in the heat of the moment. Each crew member only needed to remember that Captain Lee was always right, and they would survive the season. Viewers often enjoy watching him threaten the crew with tickets to go home on the spot if they mess up. He has made a name for himself thanks to his magical one-liners. When trying to explain to cameras about the drama he was dealing with on the boat he offered this piece of sage advice, "Life is like a sh*t sandwich. The more bread you have, the more sh*t you have to eat." The stud of the sea does not waste time trying to be the crew’s friend, but he does demand respect. The aged captain sets extremely high standards for his team with little breathing room for failure.
On Below Deck Mediterranean there is a strong woman at the helm who is a captain who is all about positivity and helping her team grow. Captain Sandy Yawn has always been a favorite amongst fans thanks to her no-nonsense demeanor. But unlike the other two captains of the franchise, she actively wants to better the careers of the crew that works below her. For example, Malia White has returned after working under the Captain as a deckhand but, is now making her grand return as bosun thanks to the teachings of Captain Sandy. The wise captain is never too busy to stop and help out on the boat, even if the chore is a third stew’s job, taking time away from the mast to make sure all is under control down below. She enjoys checking in on the paying customers to make sure all is up to standard for them and they are thoroughly enjoying their journey. But some viewers feel Captain Sandy is a bit all over the place since she micromanages too much and does not let her crew do their jobs. Even though she may multitask, fans also can appreciate that Captain Sandy had worked very hard for her success. When she was younger, she had a drinking problem that caused her to have a DUI. She decided at that moment to become sober for herself. She even helped talk to one of her crew members about his issues with alcohol in seasons past.
Then we have Glenn Shephard, the newest of the three captains to TV. Below Deck: Sailing has one major factor that sets it apart: the wind. The sailboats are sleeker in design than that of their mother yacht counterparts. Due to that specific design, the galleys are much smaller, and the stew stations are almost nonexistent, making the crew's living quarters a bit more cramped, to say the least. Fans were quick to point out that they had never seen a leader like Captain Glen before on the franchise. Many would argue that Captain Glen is a true sailor since he has to depend on the wind and manipulate the boat accordingly with the help of his seamen. Raising sails, lowering the mast, and being able to find the jib (it’s the second most common sail) is all in a day’s work for the new captain. As for Captain Glen’s skippering style, many are argued he is a mix of both Lee and Sandy. The Commander feels he is much more laid back than the other two. To Bravo fans, he came across as the most hands-off. It was noted that Captain Glen enjoyed giving ownership of each department to the department heads. Fans of the franchise appreciated how he did not want to stifle their initiative. But do not be mistaken, Captain Glen kept a close eye on everyone on his vessel. The Captain often joked during filming that he was a "macromanager," saying he prided himself on the fact that he could get the best out of his crew by leaving them to it.
Below Deck doesn't feel as staged or exaggerated because it's truly about the love of the sea even though drama occurs. People who are crammed into tiny living spaces in order to provide round-the-clock service are bound to lose it from time to time. The fact that the franchise can not only film a relatable crew but show a whole new world to viewers makes the show a pinnacle series for viewers. But which captain in the nautical hit would be crowned the favorite if one had to choose? Right now, we would have to pick Captain Lee, if not only for his ability to strike fear into the hearts of others. He wasn’t even supposed to be on the Bravo show. The man just refused to leave his boat, so Bravo was stuck with him. Thank goodness for Captain Lee’s stubbornness because it helped launch one of the most successful franchises on the Bravo network.
Below Deck Mediterranean airs Mondays at 9pm EST on Bravo.
