Black Canary Should Be DC's Next OFFICIAL Green Lantern

Aside from the actual Green Lanterns themselves, plenty of other characters have had the honor of wearing a power ring at one point or another - Superman, Batman, Lobo, even Daffy Duck from Loony Tunes (yes, really). But there’s one character who would make a great fit as DC’s next addition to the Emerald Knights, and her name is Black Canary.

Black Canary’s comic book history is a little complex. The first iteration of the character was named Dinah Drake, and following the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, the mantle passed to her daughter, Dinah Laurel Lance - a name fans of the TV show Arrow may recognize. However, the New 52 reboot essentially combined the two versions of the character. Dinah Drake was once again Black Canary, and she later marries a man named Kurt Lance, thus merging the two names.

Canary’s most recent origin story is that she was a street-kid in Gotham who wound up being taken in by Desmond Lamar, a former Special Forces agent. Lamar owned a dojo and trained Dinah in martial arts before eventually passing away, leaving her in charge of the dojo. When local gangs come around and try to intimidate Dinah into paying them “protection money,” she fights them off herself. Even though her dojo was later burned down, she showed tremendous willpower in protecting it - just the sort of quality needed in a Green Lantern.

Another quality that sets Dinah apart is her Canary Cry, a superpower that allows her to emit ultrasonic vibrations using her voice. This ability comes from her Metagene, which is basically the equivalent of the X-Gene in Marvel comics that gives mutants like the X-Men their powers. The Canary Cry has been shown to be strong enough to break metal, knock out Giganta, and even blow the head off of Amazo. Considering the Green Lanterns usually don’t have any powers without their rings, it would be interesting to see a meta-human like Black Canary take on the role. But perhaps the greatest piece of evidence that Black Canary should be the next Green Lantern is that she’s actually already been one.

In the ongoing DCeased series, Black Canary becomes a Green Lantern after taking down a zombie Hal Jordan. While she initially hesitant to accept such a power, she proves she is more than worthy of it. Canary manages to protect a large group of survivors from a nuclear blast caused by Captain Atom by creating a shield around them using the ring. Moreover, as seen when she took down zombie Hal, her Canary Cry can penetrate Lantern ring constructs, which would certainly come in handy when taking on other, evil Lanterns like the Sinestro Corps. With feats like these on her resume, Black Canary should definitely be a top candidate for her own power ring in the mainstream DC universe.
