A new Dark Souls 3 mod turns the game into the unlikeliest Modern Warfare crossover ever by adding real-world guns to From Software’s dark fantasy epic. Though it’s not generally held in the same critical high esteem as the first game in the series, Dark Souls 3 got positive reviews when it was released in 2016, even without gun-toting undead knights.
Even as most players turn their attention toward From Software’s mysterious upcoming game, Elden Ring, Dark Souls 3 continues to live on thanks to the efforts of the modding community. There are plenty of mods aimed around refining the game’s combat, including the Hunter’s Combat mod that may be the closest thing players get to Bloodborne 2 in a long time. Then there are the mods that aim to make Dark Souls 3’s grim fantasy a little more lighthearted by adding things like Adidas tracksuits and enemies disguised as furniture.
The newly released Modern Firearm mod for Dark Souls 3, spotted by PC Gamer, falls in the extremely lore unfriendly latter category, but rather than just go for cheap laughs, it turns Dark Souls 3 into a wildly different game while still being hilarious to see in action. Modern Firearm replaces all of the crossbows in Dark Souls 3 with modern weapons like the MP5 and the M16. The mod’s creator, Forsakensilver, notes on Nexus Mods that “it is not a balanced mod, and is just made for fun,” for anyone tempted to complain about it wrecking the notoriously punishing Dark Souls experience. Despite its silly premise, the Modern Firearm mod is extremely well made, as seen in its trailer on YouTube, with high-quality weapon models ripped from Resident Evil 2 and Call of Duty 4, satisfying gunfire sound effects to echo through Dark Souls 3’s abandoned crypts, and even alternate firing modes for one-handed or two-handed wielding. The mod’s author also has a collection of cosmetic mods on Nexus and is the same developer behind the Hunter’s Combat mod.
From Software’s games have inspired a fanatically devoted fanbase eager to line up for punishment whenever the studio releases a new game. That’s also led to some pretty heated debates about developers’ intent and the value of difficulty settings in games. Modern Firearm chucks all that aside, turning Dark Souls 3 into almost a parody of From Software’s formula, opening it up to a very different playstyle and maybe new players.
As players wait for the eventual release of Elden Ring and wish for the announcement of Bloodborne 2, Modern Firearm can at least provide a distracting alternate version of Dark Souls 3. And if that’s not diverting enough, they can always try to beat the game with a banana.
Dark Souls 3 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
