Disney+ has been, it's fair to say, a resounding success for the Walt Disney Company. The house of mouse put together a streaming service that managed to appeal to the nostalgia and inner childhood within every adult, alongside guaranteeing family-friendly content for everyone to enjoy.
It certainly has its flaws, but with massive acquisitions, new animated projects, and some pretty big franchises, the streaming service is going from strength to strength. This could be the right time to expand further, cementing the place of the platform in the streaming wars. On the other hand though, perhaps Disney+ shouldn't run before it can walk.
10 Doesn't Need To: Streaming Wars
Disney's history has always been about innovation. Now that the streaming wars are upon the industry, there's no better time to continue to evolve. But, Disney just made its first big step forward.
Due to these ongoing market conflicts, there's very little room to make mistakes. Failure can often be good, but in this current climate if Disney+ made a few mistakes other platforms like Amazon Prime, Netflix, or HBO Max would quickly step up even more.
9 Expand: FOX As A Feature
Disney+ currently boasts a number of big brands that drives all the content on their platform. Marvel, PIXAR, Disney, National Geographic, and Star Wars all hold banners on their front page.
Perhaps it's time to add one more, 20th Century FOX. The brand has been renamed 20th Century Studios and with Disney now holding the rights to all of their films perhaps it should put extra focus on this, alongside brands like Night At The Museum and The Simpsons.
8 Doesn't Need To: New Content In Development
There are so many news shows and other various bits of content in development that maybe Disney should focus on that for now. There's large tent-pole Marvel series, sequels to classic Lucasfilm content, and novel adaptations.
There are so many different projects in the production line that it is hard to argue that the Walt Disney Company isn't doing enough to secure their position as a streaming giant.
7 Expand: Hulu International
Hulu has a wide variety of content such as reality shows, high budget dramas, and animated originals. With Disney now owning a controlling stake in the company, they have launched a package that allows the combined subscriptions of ESPN+, Disney+, and Hulu.
This only applies to certain regions though, with Hulu not even launching internationally. Perhaps there can, therefore, start to be a Hulu option across the globe, where Disney+ has additional Hulu content that those audiences don't normally get to watch.
6 Doesn't Need To: Significant Delays
A number of projects have been significantly delayed due to Covid-19. There's been major stalling on the production of so many shows and films until they are safe to film again. Releases have also been delayed due to this.
This isn't the time to expand when the content just isn't there yet. There's going to be a period of time with so many releases that this can also affect how Disney+ is performing. For now, it's time to wait rather than to act.
5 Expand: Making History
If 20th Century Studios isn't the correct brand to add to Disney+ then there's another factually based series of programming that would fit into the Disney world view of teaching the future generation.
One of the assets owned by the company is the History Channel and all related media. The content there would be great to watch alongside National Geographic and would be an easy way to keep Disney+ feeling fresh with award-winning documentaries.
4 Doesn't Need To: Too Soon
The streaming service is really only in its infancy. It is still taking its baby steps, trying to figure out how to move forward in the quickly changing industry.
It has already made a few mistakes and is failing to highlight some of its underrated content. There's a lot the company still needs to learn about running a streaming service, so expansion perhaps shouldn't be on the cards so early.
3 Expand: Original Franchises
Disney is working on a lot of adaptations, sequels, and spin-offs. There are very few projects in the work that are entirely original, but it's an area that they could really work on.
Netflix is currently the king of original streaming content. Every year they produce hundreds of new concepts, never before seen in any other medium. Disney would do well to follow this model.
2 Doesn't Need To: Theater Closures
Streaming services are benefiting heavily from the current situation as audiences turn to these platforms while the cinemas are shut. This has even lead to Disney speeding up schedules or skipping the cinema release altogether.
It's a period of time that means that Disney+ doesn't need to expand in any way. It can continue to perform as it is until there is another fundamental shift in entertainment.
1 Expand: New Animation Studio
Disney's lifeblood is animation. The company made its name off of a drawing of a small mouse. If Disney+ is to demonstrate everything the company is then it needs a new animation regime.
A new studio designed to produce animated content for Disney+ exclusively, could give the platform the edge in the streaming wars and bring the company back to its origins.
