Floor Is Lava When & Where Netflix's Hot New Show Was Filmed

Netflix’s surprise summer hit Floor Is Lava sees teams tackling an obstacle course where there is only one rule: don’t fall in! Hosted by Rutledge Wood, the show has become a phenomenon since it debuted on the streamer last month.

Three teams of three made up of what could be co-workers, best friends, roommates or family members, must traverse a fantastically decorated room where every object can be used to get across from one side to the other. Each team member across earns a point and the team with the most points in the fastest time wins the $10,000 grand prize and the coveted lava lamp trophy.

Not much was known about what went into making the larger than life show, until now.

We now know that the show was filmed in an abandoned IKEA in Burbank, California. In the self-serve area, to be exact! According to the show’s production designer, Bruce Ryan who told House Beautiful: "The lava tanks were filled in what was the self-serve area, where the customers would load their flat furniture boxes. Anyone who has purchased from IKEA knows how heavy these flat boxes can be, so imagine a floor that could withstand hundreds of tons of heavy boxes and you can see how it was perfect to withstand the weight of the lava, where many Hollywood Studios would have surely failed."

It was a smart choice. Just from the near 100,000 gallons of lava used and how effective it was thematically, a Hollywood sound stage wouldn’t have given us the behemoth that the show was meant to be. The show was made by production companies Haymaker Productions and Gang of Wolves. One of the producers, Tim Sullivan, passed away before the show was released. He and fellow EP on the show, Anthony Carbone, founded Gang of Wolves with Sony Pictures.

Co-executive producer Megan McGrath from Haymaker Productions told USA Today that the idea came about over the holidays. “At Christmas a couple of years ago, I was visiting my parents in Pennsylvania. I went into the basement. It hadn't changed at all since I was a kid, and it all came flooding back to me.” She went on to say, “I remembered playing for hours with my brother, jumping from the couch to the coffee table and throwing the cushions on the ground to act like lily pads to get away from the lava. And I realized we could make it into a pretty epic game show.”

The show was filmed last summer but it unclear when exactly during then it was shot. As for the show's second season, it all depends on how well this first one does, but it's highly likely that we'll see more people falling in the future. Either way, next time you're at an IKEA remember, although Floor Is Lava lets you play on the furniture, don't do it in the showroom, or else you'll probably be asked to leave.
