Many fans agree that Gossip Girl would be nothing without Serena Vanderwoodsen. She is the "It Girl" to end all "It Girls" and is ruthless whenever anyone tries to take that status from her, even though she pretends none of it matters to her. When Serena first comes back to the Upper East Side from a year at a Connecticut boarding school, everyone wants to know where she’s been and what she’s doing next.
Despite her status and family name, Serena isn’t invincible. There are many times she gets away seemingly unscathed, but the damage to her psyche and her reputation chip away at that status with every incident. Her actions and the outcomes are among the many things Serena has done that would never fly today.
10 Revenge On Blair Upon Return To NYC
The show begins when Serena comes back to the Upper East Side and finds out that Blair is now queen at their school and among their social groups. Blair shuns her by not giving her an invitation to her Kiss On The Lips party. This kicks off several incidents with Serena on the path of getting back her status as queen.
She’ll do anything to lord it over Blair, including letting her find out about how she had sex with Blair’s boyfriend before she left. The way she clawed her way through Blair’s life to gain status would never fly today.
9 Acted Out To Hurt Bart
Season 1 showed Lily Vanderwoodsen getting together with Bart Bass and it isn’t long before they get engaged. The action hits Serena harder than she thought it would and when Bart starts to implement new rules in their home, Serena rebels hard.
She wears outfits that barely cover her, makes sure she’s photographed in all the society pages, and doesn’t care that her actions could hurt Bart’s business. She cares only about breaking his rules. In today’s world, with social media added to the society pages, she would be eviscerated by fans and friends alike.
8 Let Her Fake SAT Score Stand
When Georgina Sparks comes back to town, she drugs Serena and gets her to party all night when she has to take the SATs the next day. She begs Chuck to bail her out and have the testing center keep the doors open. Instead, he pays someone else to take the test for Serena.
When Serena finds out, she doesn’t say a word. In today’s world of admissions scandals and enhanced security protocols, this would never fly.
7 The Story Of Pete Fairman
The end of season 1 showed the true story of how Serena “killed” someone. Blair tries to hold this over her head and make her feel guilty about it during their dinner with the Dean at Yale. The actual story shows that Pete Fairman died of an accidental overdose and Serena was just blaming herself because she handed him the dose.
The story wouldn’t fly today because Serena’s involvement would have been known about already. Police would have had to interview her and her parents would have been called because she was a minor. Her mother didn’t even know what happened. That would never fly today.
6 Covered For Nate’s Adulterous Affair
In the Hamptons, during the summer before senior year, Nate and Serena appear to be dating, but it’s all a front. Nate is actually dating an older married woman and her husband has no idea.
He’s sneaking around with this woman (who is basically paying him, but that’s a different story) and in public, he pretends that he’s with Serena and Serena lets him. She isn’t one to judge, but in this case, Nate is being pressured pretty hard and she doesn’t stop it.
5 Drunk At Thanksgiving - More Than Once
There’s a running joke throughout the series that Serena is always drunk on Thanksgiving. There’s a flashback scene where Dan sees her on the street and rescues her from being hit by a car, at the expense of his pies.
The next year, she’s drunk on Thanksgiving again. Somehow, her parents and Blair’s never find out and it never ruins the meal due to the intervening of her friends. In today’s world, a teenager drunk at a family event would never fly.
4 Took Advantage Of Supposed Daddy Issues
Serena went searching for her father and it led to acting out in the most public ways possible, in hopes that he would notice her. She dragged Carter Baizen into it and let everyone believe they were together. He used his considerable resources and connections to chase Serena’s father everywhere they went and help her orchestrate the stunts she pulled to catch his attention.
In today’s world, unless her father was dead and her mother was completely oblivious to the internet and all forms of media, this would never fly.
3 Her Taste For Teachers
During season 3, the story comes out that Serena had a fling with teacher Ben Donovan while in boarding school and the resulting scandal had his sister coming after her for revenge, almost to the point of near-death for Serena. In season 4, Serena begins a relationship with her professor, Colin Forrester.
He happens to be Juliet’s cousin and is financially backing her existence on the Upper East Side. The history of being romantically involved with teachers, as well as the connection between Colin and Ben, would never fly today.
2 Ready Acceptance Of Charlie
When Charlotte Rhodes, aka Charlie, comes on the scene as Serena’s cousin, she’s introduced by Carol, Lily’s sister and Charlie’s mother, so it’s normal for everyone to assume that she’s the real Charlie. But she goes off her meds and tries to steal Serena’s life and Serena doesn’t look into it further. Charlie has a prescription and Blair and Serena appear to have FBI level investigation skills.
But when it comes to her cousin under suspicion, Serena lets it all go. In today’s world of broadcasting everything online, Serena accepting everything without question would never fly.
1 Sabrina The Wisconsin Native
The last season showed Serena living somewhere off the map with Steven Spence, CEO of a vitamin company. She’s become a different person, Sabrina from Wisconsin, and everyone back home believes her to be missing. Her friends search for her diligently for months and her mother packs up her room.
Eventually, it is discovered that the older man Serena has run away with had a fling with her mother many years before. Running away like that and never knowing her mother had been with her boyfriend is a story that would never fly today.
