Gotham Star Pokes Fun At Upcoming Batman GCPD TV Show

Gotham star Ben McKenzie playfully pokes fun at the upcoming Batman GCPD spin-off series. Starting in 2014, McKenzie spent five seasons playing Gotham detective James Gordon in the Fox television series. It centered on Gotham's criminal underbelly following the deaths of Martha and Thomas Wayne, and while Gordon was one of Gotham's lead characters, much of the show followed several familiar Batman villains such as the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and the Riddler (Cory Michael Smith). And, of course, it tracked the early days of Bruce Wayne's (David Mazouz) journey to becoming Batman.

Gotham ended its run just last year, but the world of the infamous city's harried police department is already getting a new project in the form of Matt Reeves' spin-off series. Reeves, of course, is directing The Batman for the big screen, and news broke a few weeks ago that he's developing a show for HBO Max centered on the Gotham PD within the same universe. Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter is attached to write and executive produce, and the show has already been given a full series commitment.

McKenzie recently appeared on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast and took some fun shots at the Batman spin-off. When talking about Gotham's central premise, McKenzie referenced the upcoming spin-off without ever outright mentioning it, saying this:

It was hard to argue how cool [Gotham's] idea is. So much so that, I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, you might even do the same idea again, if you wanted to do a cop show set in Gotham City, you could do it again even after you’ve done Gotham.

In case anyone doubts he's talking about the HBO Max show, McKenzie then asked Rosenbaum if "you know about that?" Truthfully, it is rather amusing that this spin-off is being created while a show like Gotham exists, seeing as they'll have similar stories. Of course, the Batman spin-off will be set in a different universe and might feature a completely different Jim Gordon (provided Jeffrey Wright reprises his role from the film). Despite their near-identical premises, the two shows might end up being completely different.

When it comes to comic book-based projects, it seems inevitable that there will be overlaps when it comes to certain plots. After all, how many times has Marvel adapted the X-Men's Dark Phoenix storyline? The Batman spin-off just needs to differentiate itself from Gotham to really justify its existence. Luckily, though, it already has a lot going for it thanks to its connection to the movie universe. Plus, it will reportedly help kick off an entirely new Batman universe across film and television. Fans are undoubtedly excited to see where this project goes, and if it feels too much like Gothamthey will likely be quick to point that out.
