Marvel Comics' upcoming Empyre event, which sees Marvel's first family the Fantastic Four as well as The Avengers become embroiled in a new alliance between longtime foes the Kree and Skrull empire, has now locked in two new members of the family.
The main appeal of the Fantastic Four since their debut in the early 1960s (apart from the fact that they are explorers more than superheroes) has been that the characters are a family unit. The Fantastic Four are not The Avengers, where they will occasionally separate and regroup when a major crisis arises. This is a team that must sleep under the same roof with each other and resolve their issues like any other, which can end in either harmony or fighting... maybe a bit of both. And that family has just gotten a whole lot bigger.

In order to help prepare for the coming event, a series of Empyre tie in issues have been released in recent weeks with Fantastic Four now getting its time to shine. The newly released issue depicts the members of the Fantastic Four as audience members of a prize fight on an alien planet. The only disturbing caveat of this event is that the individuals fighting are in fact kids, a Kree boy by the name of Jo-Venn and a Skrull girl named N'Kalla. Refusing to let Jo-Venn and N'Kalla live in these conditions, the Fantastic Four are able successfully buy the two alien children from the planet's Profiteer. Though Empyre: Fantastic Four #0, is not an issue of the main Empyre title, the new issue could have major repercussions for the Fantastic Four moving forward.
To previously help expand on the Fantastic Four's family nature, creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced the character of Franklin Richards (Powerhouse) in Fantastic Four Annual #6 in 1968, while another child Valeria would join the family in 2002's Fantastic Four #54 by Joe Quesada and Mike Wieringo. Given that their parents Reed and Sue Richards are some of the most gifted individuals not to mention their exposure to cosmic rays, Franklin and Valeria would be born gifted as well. Franklin potentially being the world's most powerful mutant and Valeria possibly even smarter than her father Reed.
Having fought the Kree and Skrulls for decades, it's almost poetic that the Fantastic Four are now caring for members of the enemy races. There is a chance that both Jo-Venn and N'Kalla will become more than what they have been raised to do, under the care of the Fantastic Four. But, in the meantime it's most likely a good idea to keep the duo away from Doctor Doom.
Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 is available now from Marvel Comics.
