If there is one thing audiences have learned from great adventure shows it's that every warrior deserves a great companion. In Game of Thrones, Daenerys had her dragons, Arya once had Nymeria, and Jon Snow had Ghost. From the moment they first met in season 1, fans knew a bond had been created.
Ghost has always been there for Jon and the two always seemed to find a way to back each other no matter the circumstance. Even though the Game Of Thrones’ series finale is long over, looking at the best Jon Snow and Ghost moments never fails to warm fans' hearts.
10 When They Both Fled Castle Black To Return To Winterfell
Upon hearing of the death of his father in season 1's “Fire And Blood,” Jon Snow tries to flee Castle Black and return to his family in Winterfell. He took a great risk in doing so as it is forbidden to leave the Night’s Watch after having taken the oath. His companion Ghost, however, was with him every step of the way and didn’t mind being on the run with Jon. Though they are both stopped by Sam and the Night's Watch brothers, Jon and Ghost would have made for the perfect runaway team.
9 When Ghost Warns Jon About Imminent Danger
When Jon comes face to face with a White Walker in the season 1 episode “The Pointy End,” Ghost does everything he can to warn him of the danger ahead. In the episode, Jon, confined to his quarters due to an altercation with Sir Alliser Thorne, lets his guard down while reflecting on the challenges ahead of him.
Thankfully, Ghost senses danger and immediately alerts Jon of the presence of a foreign object. Not only were they both able to curb the threat but also realize the great White Walker problem ahead of them.
8 When Ghost Went Ahead To Protect Jon
In season 1's “You Win or You Die," Jon and Sam go beyond the Wall to take their vows as men of the Night's Watch. While this occurs, Ghost goes ahead of Jon, scouring the area to ensure his companion’s safety. After Jon is successfully initiated, Ghost makes an appearance, bringing the arm of a possible White Walker. As fans learn later, Ghost will also accompany Jon into many battles.
7 Jon Protecting Ghost’s Life
After Jon and Ghost arrived at Castle Black together in the season 4 episode “Mockingbird,” the acting Lord Commander Alliser Thorne is unhappy to have a “wild” beast roaming around the castle. He orders Jon to take care of Ghost if he doesn’t want him to end up in “tonight’s stew.” Even though Jon was visibly upset at Thorne for his command, he asks Ghost to follow him to eventually lock him away. Though this must have been difficult for Jon as he wanted to keep his friend and companion alive. This was the best way to ensure Ghost’s safety.
6 When Ghost Helped Jon To Protect Sam
In season 1's “ Cripples, Bastards And Broken Things,” Jon and Ghost team up to protect Samwell Tarly. After joining the Night's Watch, Sam found it difficult to cope with the bullying from other brothers. Jon, however, was always sympathetic to Sam, and tells the lads that Samwell had had enough and that the bullying should stop.
When the other brothers mock him and dismiss his plea, he is brought to an ultimatum and uses Ghosts to scare them away from Sam. This tactic proved to be helpful as the bullying stopped from that day forward. Ghost also saved Sam from a White Walker in season 3's “Valar Dohaeris,” showing his loyalty not just to Jon but to his friends.
5 Ghost Helping Jon In Battle
When the wildlings invade Castle Black in the fourth season episode “The Watchers On The Wall,” both Sam and Jon needed Ghost’s help in order to defeat them. Despite having been locked up on orders by Alliser Thorne, Sam releases Ghost and asks for his help in the attack. Without hesitation, Ghost runs out to help Jon and the other members of the Night's Watch — something he repeats in season 8's “The Long Night”. This shows time and time again that Ghost would do anything to ensure Jon and his friends and family are safe.
4 Jon Stating That Ghost Is More Than Just A Pet
In season 2's “ The Ghost Of Harrenhal,” Ghost accompanies Jon and the men of the Night's Watch on a quest to conquer the wildlings. On their journey, Ghost wanders off to do some more exploring. Jon, who doesn’t want him to get lost, tells him to stay close. Night's Watch ranger Qhorin reminds Jon that Ghost is just a wild animal and will most likely not listen to him.
However, Jon insists that Ghost is not just a pet and that he is different. Fans know this to be true as although Jon and Ghost were briefly separated after this, Ghost has always remained loyal to Jon and is one of the only direwolves to have made it all the way to the end of the series.
3 Their Reunion
After being apart for more than a year, Ghost and Jon reunite again in the season 4 episode “First Of His Name.” Having both experienced some difficulties and nearly lost their lives, Ghost and Jon found comfort in being reunited. Even after knowing the trouble that lay ahead, the two still decided to stay by each other’s side and ultimately made their way back to Castle Black to partake in war and survive the wildling attack in "The Watchers On The Wall."
2 Their First Meeting
When Jon first discovered the direwolves in the pilot episode “Winter Is Coming,” little did he know that he would also meet his long-lasting companion. Initially, there were only enough direwolves for each of the Starks, excluding Jon, “the bastard”. However, Ghost was found and wasn’t going to be left behind. Thus, he was adopted by Jon. From the moment Jon picked Ghost up, viewers could see an inevitable bond between the two which would form the basis of their relationship for upcoming seasons.
1 When Jon Died And Ghost Would Not Leave His Side
When Jon Snow died in the season 5 finale, the whole world was at a standstill wondering the true fate of this beloved character. However, no one could have been more heartbroken than Ghost, Jon’s most treasured companion. Throughout the first few episodes of season 6, Ghost not only grieved Jon but also stayed by his side until he was resurrected in the “Oathbreaker.” In the previous episode, Ghost continued to help Lord Davos Seaworth in protecting Jon’s body. Doing this showed that even in death, Ghost remained loyal to Jon.
