Netflix's Dark: 7 Times We Felt Bad For Jonas (& 3 Times We Hated Him)

Netflix's Original German series Dark has changed the entire landscape of television series showbiz, especially when it comes to complex yet gripping sci-fi-mystery shows. The plotline of the critically acclaimed series is out of this world; so much so that fans have felt the need to watch an episode twice or even thrice in order to take the hints and understand exactly what's going on.

Based in the small town of Winden, the series flirts with the existence of Jonas Kahnwald, who is the closest thing Dark has to a protagonist. The series came to end quite recently with an incredible season three and there are quite a few times the fans felt bad for Jonas.

10 Felt Bad: The Only Solution Is Not It

The series is all about understanding what's going on and then developing plausible theories as to what might be the solution. With regards to this, Jonas was always thinking that he is the problem. He is the one around him this hell is based and so he thinks if he didn't exist, none of this would happen. But when Jonas finds himself in the alternate reality and understands that he doesn't exist, his face tells the whole story. The thing is, he wants to exist.

9 Felt Bad: The Almighty Reveal

To be very honest, the first couple of episodes of the show are very slow and it takes a while before things really kick-off. The first biggest reveal that comes in the series is related to Jonas, of course. After his dad, Michael Kahnwald, committed suicide, he left a note and when Jonas opened to read it, he was absolutely shellshocked to read the content in it. It turns out, Mikkel Nielsen (Ulrich and Katharina's son) travels back into the past through the cave and he grows on to become Jonas' father.

8 Felt Bad: Stuck In The Future

Jonas found himself in the future, 2052 to be exact, after making his way through a portal and soon, he found out that he is stuck in there because the only time-traveling portal that is present in the future is out of reach and overseen by Elizabeth Doppler (Charlotte's daughter).

Also, somehow, he found his way to the portal and got to know that there's no way he can stabilize it. Elizabeth caught him in the act, though, and came very close to killing him.

7 Hated Him: Taking Mikkel Nielsen To The Cave

Little by little, the show started revealing the most important things in season two and one such thing was a question - who was it that took Mikkel Nielsen to the cave in the first place? And the answer was very predictable. It was Jonas who did the deed; not the one who was present there but actually future Jonas. After learning about time travel from a very old Claudia Tiedemann, Jonas learned that he is just a pawn in this huge game and that his existence is necessary.

6 Felt Bad: Trapped Inside The Bunker

Towards the end of the season one finale, Dark's writers decided to give the fans another one of their surprises, which changed the whole outlook of the story. Jonas found his way to the bunker, which was to be used for time travel, and The Stranger locked him inside before revealing that he is, in fact, middle-aged Jonas from the future. The Stranger told Jonas that he has to be locked inside because if he isn't, then he wouldn't grow up to be The Stranger. It's hard stuff, isn't it?

5 Felt Bad: Martha's Kill

In season three of Dark, the show's writers decided to take the storyline in a whole new direction with the introduction of Eva (the old version of Martha). Jonas went into the second world, only to be used by Eva and to do what was asked of him to keep the timeline in check.

After he did all of the work, Eva ordered another Martha from the future to come out and kill Jonas in front of the Martha who loved him. Honestly, it was such a sad scene and the fans felt bad for both of them.

4 Hated Him: Pushing Martha Away

When Jonas learned about his father's real identity and came to know that his father is actually Martha's little brother, he thought that his relationship with Martha was wrong. He felt like he was committing a crime when in reality it was nothing like that because the events taking place in Winden are supernatural. Even though Jonas wanted to be with Martha, for some reason, he convinced himself that he is better off without her and started pushing her away, without even explaining anything to Martha.

3 Felt Bad: Adam's Deadly Blow

Adam, or the old version of Jonas, has inflicted pain on everyone in Winden; so much so that he didn't even leave his younger self as in front of Jonas, Adam killed Martha. And the reason for that is still unclear but it might just be that Adam wanted to get a message across to Jonas that he needs to toughen up. Imagine someone killing the love of one's life just to make the said person understand the value of being alone. It's so sadistic and hurting.

2 Felt Bad: Adam Using Him

The first time Jonas met Adam, he came to know about most things that were going in Winden. Adam used Jonas' curiosity against him and he manipulated him into doing his bidding. It was really simple because Jonas had the opportunity to save his father and there was no way he was letting it go away. When Jonas made his way to the time before his father committed suicide, he came to understand that he was used by Adam so that he can get the message across to Michael that he needs to commit suicide in order for the timeline to run the usual course.

1 Hated Him: Turning Into Adam

When the fans got to know that Adam is, in fact, Jonas from the future, they were shocked because there's no way someone who thinks like Jonas can end up being the most sinister person in the world. Jonas is caring, forgiving, and truthful; everything that Adam isn't. The glimpse of this transformation is given properly in the third season when The Stranger starts becoming more righteous than he ever was and he even kills his own mother just to prove a point.
