Predator: The Myers-Briggs® Personalities Of Dutch Schaefer & His Team

The smash 1987 sci-fi hit Predator was successful not just for its creature design, but also its amazing and diverse cast of ultra-macho male leads who tore up the Central American jungle whilst battling the galaxy's most lethal big game hunter. It remains one of the single-best action movies ever forged, and has since gone on to become a pop culture franchise with staying power.

Arnold Schwarzenegger led the cast as Dutch Schaefer, the highly effective leader of an ultra-elite military rescue team. Each member of this team brought a particular kind of Myers-Briggs® personality type to the group's dynamic, and we're going to break them all down right now.

9 Dutch - INTJ (The Mastermind)

Dutch might be a born leader, but his personality type suggests he's an INTJ at heart. He has a methodical mind, and a knack for improving processes and finding solutions to major problems. When he and his team were attacked by the Predator, Dutch went straight into analytical mode to identify and exploit any weak points in the creature's design.

He's also an inward thinker who seems highly selective about his relationships. He's independent, and he feels more comfortable with his rescue team, all of whom are by-the-books combat veterans with a proven track record of reliability and organizational skills.

8 Dillon - ESTJ (The Supervisor)

Dillon's ambition and hard work seem to have paid off by the time the events of Predator take place. As a CIA analyst and operative, Dillon believes in getting things done in a highly methodical manner - perhaps too methodical.

His push for structure and organization is indicative of an ESTJ mind, and he's not afraid to take initiative and speak his mind if he believes that existing leadership might be faltering. Ultimately, his ambition would be his undoing, but there's no denying the strength that his ESTJ traits brought to the table.

7 Mac - ISTJ (The Inspector)

Mac might have lost his marbles following the Predator's big reveal, but his overall personality suggests an ISTJ type, which is trademarked by a sense of tradition, duty, and order within established systems. Mac was straight-faced, introverted, and he knew his job and how he fit into the overall team.

He was also huge on standards, another major trait of ISTJ types. When Dillon got clumsy during a sneaking mission in the jungle, Mac became incensed and openly threatened him in order to get him back into line. Clearly, he took protocol very seriously.

6 Poncho - ENTP (The Visionary)

Poncho was a vital cog of Dutch's rescue team, acting as a sort of second-in-command, and his ENTP personality might have had a lot to do with it. Understated in his role, Poncho nevertheless knew how to analyze a situation and innovate a solution. He and Dutch seemed to be on the same page, suggesting the two complimented each other on the battlefield.

He also displayed ENTP traits such as wit and banter within his team. He wasn't afraid to poke fun at Blain's eccentricities (most notably his chewing tobacco habit), and he got along very well with his teammates by reserving judgment about them, and pushing for the team to work together at all times.

5 Blain - ESTP (The Dynamo)

Blain was a wrecking ball that Dutch could turn loose on the enemy, then stand back and watch the carnage unfold. He had all the markings of an ESTP personality type, including a penchant for thrillseeking. Blain could adapt quickly to any situation and make moves that would benefit the team and give them an upper hand.

His wild personality was highly indicative of a Dynamo, from his aggressive personality to his cowboy hat and chewing tobacco. In the midst of a firefight, he mixed business with pleasure, but when things got back to normal, he preferred to keep his interactions fun, drama-free and arms-length, which is typical of ESTPs.

4 Billy - ENTJ (The Commander)

Billy might not be a commander in the strictest sense of the word, but he takes on the values and traits of the ENTJ type and applies them to his duties. As an expert tracker and front-line soldier, Billy relies heavily on logic and reasoning to determine the best outcome to a problem. He's assertive enough to take initiative, while still remaining dedicated to the chain of command.

He also may have been the one member of the team who realized the futility of battling the Predator, especially after all of their plans had gone awry. With no other options on the table, Billy sacrificed himself to buy time for his team members to escape - the true mark of a commander.

3 Hawkins - ENFP (The Champion)

Hawkins was the first to die at the hands of the Predator, which is a shame given his ENFP personality type. His presence within the team helped cut tension and get everyone to relax and have a good laugh once in a while. This is a trademark trait of ENFP types who love seeing others enjoying themselves, and will actively try to cheer them up.

They are also very witty and full of laughs, which is obvious in Hawkins' NSFW style of humor. This was indicative of the ENFP's desire to generate enthusiasm and energy within his team.

2 Anna - INTJ (The Mastermind)

One of the reasons Dutch Schaefer decided to free Anna from her bindings and allow her to assist the team might have been their shared personality type - the INTJ. As a guerrilla insurgent, Anna was no innocent flower, and she applied her skills of coercion and manipulation when she was first captured by Dutch's team and pretended not to speak English.

To Anna, her capture was yet another problem to be solved, and it was only when she realized that they were all facing a much more terrifying threat that she decided to put aside her dislike for the American team and work together with them. From an INTJ standpoint, this made perfect, logical sense.

1 Major Philips - ENTJ (The Commander)

The second of two Commanders on this list is Major Philips, who only makes brief appearances at the beginning and end of the film. Yet, it's obvious he's a General who didn't get his rank without knowing how to lead effectively as a pragmatic authority figure.

Despite his rank, Philips was keen on adhering strictly to the chain of command, which is indicative of the ENTJ's desire to manage and organize within established systems, while utilizing the best people for the job. In the case of the film, that meant Dutch Schaefer and his rescue team.
