CW's cult fantasy drama Supernatural is set to finish its 15th and final season. In its 12th season, the series brought back a long-dead character, Mary Winchester, who was originally killed off in the pilot episode by the demon Azazel way back in 2005. It marked a relatively huge change for a series that is known for that sort of thing.
As always, season 12 brought both the laughs and the frights the way that Supernatural has mastered. Here are some of the funniest episodes of the season, and some that would scare the living daylights out of fans.
10 Funniest: The Foundry
Lucifer has been released from his cage in Hell and is running amock on earth. He even has a new vessel, a Keith Richards look-alike aging rockstar. Realizing they might have a lead on Lucifer, Castiel and Crowley show up separately to investigate the whereabouts of the Devil, but soon make an awkward couple working together.
Cas has learned his game from the Winchesters; he is aware that the boys often take their fake ids from pop culture references. But unfortunately for him, and hilariously for the audience, he decides to call himself Agent Beyoncé, which means that he isn't taken quite as seriously as an FBI agent as he would like.
9 Scariest: Mamma Mia
Sam has been captured and is being tortured by the British Men of Letters. It is difficult to see his suffering, but the younger Winchester is a tough nut to crack, which unfortunately also means that has to suffer unbearable pain before he breaks.
But scarier still is what Lucifer, as the rockstar Vince, is up to. Crowley and Rowena team up to destroy his vessel, but although the sulfuric acid they douse him in scars his human body, turning him into nothing but horrifying flesh and bones, the archangel is clearly too powerful for the King of Hell and the red-headed witch.
8 Funniest: The One You've Been Waiting For
The brothers investigate strange happenings surrounding an antique pocket watch from the 1930s. They believe they are dealing with the Nazi Thule Society, a group of Nazi necromancers shrouded in mystery, who are looking for ways to make a comeback.
Only this time, the stakes turn out to be much higher. In a bizarre cross between Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code, the boys find that Adolph Hitler is being resurrected by a group of his deranged zombie followers. After the brothers fail to thwart the kidnapping of Hitler's great grand-niece, Sam and Dean finally come face to face with the Führer himself. The episode ends with Dean shooting the deranged Nazi leader in the head; the older Winchester cannot believe himself but unfortunately for him, not many people would believe this rare accomplishment.
7 Scariest: LOTUS
Lucifer is hopping from one vessel to another, but more importantly, and disturbingly, he is choosing some of the most high-profile human vessels.
The show has never dithered from including some social commentary into the narrative if they could. Here they set up a disturbing backdrop where the Devil is possessing VIPs like a millionaire industry expert, the Archbishop, and last but not the least, the President of the United States himself. The violence and devastation he leaves in his wake and the very thought of the havoc he could wreak as the leader of the most powerful nation in the world are shocking.
6 Funniest: Regarding Dean
In an episode where Jensen Ackles once again gets to show off his perfect comic timing, Dean gets hit by an old Druid spell which causes him to slowly lose his memory.
From forgetting which key goes into his baby--the Impala's-- ignition to not remembering cozying up to a waitress at a local bar and getting smacked across the face for that, Dean is completely lost. However, things soon go from being funny to rather sad as Dean gradually starts forgetting his own name, what he and Sam does, and who he loves.
5 Scariest: The Raid
The British Men of Letters are expanding in America, hoping to recruit some of its best hunters. They also operate in a much more organized and efficient manner than the individual hunters in the States, gathering intelligence and acquiring top-notch ammunition.
However, the monsters in the States aren't all that happy at their efficiency. The 14th episode shows a large scale coup carried out on the Men of Letters lair by a set of vampires, headed by the Alpha vamp himself. One can only imagine the bloodbath that follows.
4 Funniest: Ladies Drink Free
The boys build a sort of rapport with Mick Davies, the loyal operative of the British Men of Letters. The three are out investigating a werewolf attack, and Dean finds out that working for the Men of Letter has its perks.
Since the inception of the show, the brothers have been shown to rough it in cheap motels with rickety beds and tiny bathrooms. But they soon realize that the British Men of Letters do things in style, having their operatives put up in three-star hotels with pools, shampoos in the bathroom, and great food. Dean, unwilling as he had been to join the ranks of these Brits, seems almost persuaded to do the same.
3 Scariest: The British Invasion
The episode takes a look at his past -- it turns out that Mick has had a chequered past, being trained at the British Men of Letter equivalent of Hogwarts, Kendricks Academy, under the heartless high command, reminiscent of the malevolent Dolores Umbridge.
The revelation that Kendricks requires its students to bump each other off, quite literally, to know who can survive in a fight, is disturbing, to say the least.
2 Funniest: All Along The Watchtower
The season finale isn't conventionally funny but has dollops of dark comedy, thanks to some exceptional comic timing by actors Mark Sheppard and Mark Pellegrino.
The Devil is free from the shackles Crowley had restrained him with, and going on a rampage looking for Kelly Kline, who is carrying his spawn. The boys too are looking for Kelly who is being tended to by Cas. It's heartwarming to watch the angel preparing himself to deal with a pregnant woman and childbirth. He has bought at least a hundred packets of diapers and has read up on every possible bit of information available on the internet on newborns and labor. Of course, given that a Nephilim, i.e. Lucifer's offspring, isn't born every day, even the all-knowing internet isn't enough to know what to expect.
1 Scariest: There's Something About Mary
American hunters are being killed viciously. As Sam and Dean start investigating Eileen Leahy's death, they realize that the British Men of Letters, whom they had grudgingly come to accept as partners in crime, could be behind the deaths of their friends and colleagues.
But what they do not know yet is that not only are the Men of Letters unleashing hellhounds on hunters, but they are also creating ruthless killers, one of them being Mary Winchester who is being brainwashed to kill other hunters by first gaining their trust. The various evils at play, including the nexus between demons and hunters, are exposed, and the scene is set for an impending finale replete with blood and death.
