Toy Story: 5 Characters Who Could Pull Off A Spin-Off Movie (& 5 That Couldn't)

The Toy Story franchise is one of the most successful in not just animation, but movie history. All four films are of incredibly high quality and the franchise has built up an amazing audience, many of which have grown up with the characters over time.

While Toy Story 4 wrapped up the Woody journey perfectly, that doesn't necessarily mean the franchise has to stop. Of course, it is tough to continue things as normal with the lead character gone, but which characters could potentially carry a spin-off movie, and which would not be able to?

10 Could: Buzz Lightyear

Starting off with a very obvious character, there is no doubt that Buzz Lightyear could pull-off his own movie. There have been straight-to-DVD released movies based on Buzz, but he's certainly got the popularity and character depth to also pull off a major release.

Whether it's playing into Buzz's history with Zurg in a fun prequel style movie or seeing him becoming the leading toy with Woody departing, it would be interesting to see how he takes care of the group all on his own.

9 Couldn't: Rex

Rex is certainly one of the most popular characters in the Toy Story franchise, but that doesn't mean he would work for a spin-off movie. Of course, dinosaurs are very marketable and Pixar could easily tap into that considering how many toys in that world have been created.

However, Rex is designed perfectly to chime in with funny one-liners, bringing moments of sheer panic to the group. He's not so much a toy that audiences would want to watch for a long period of time, mainly because his personality hasn't been fleshed out enough to really warrant it.

8 Could: Forky

Forky might have been a new character in the latest movie, but that doesn't mean he couldn't lead his own spin-off movie. He proved to be unbelievably popular with fans and he brought a lot of comedy into the film which would work nicely as his own movie.

It would be interesting to see how Forky develops as a character, whether or not he accepts that he is a toy, or if he continues to believe he's trash. Pixar could easily change him up as well considering how easy a toy like that is to constantly model and play with for a child.

7 Couldn't: Andy

Fans have often wanted to know more about Andy over the years, mainly due to how important a role he plays in the franchise. He's the boy who brings the toys together and his imagination created some incredible moments over the course of the movies.

However, even though a spin-off movie about him could be interesting, this would be best served as a short film or only a small plot for another one. Having a Toy Story spin-off that isn't about toys and instead focuses on humans just isn't the right call, unfortunately.

6 Could: Bo Peep

Bo Peep has always been a popular character within the Toy Story franchise, however, there is a big chunk of her character's story that is just totally unknown. After she is no longer part of the group with Andy, Bo isn't seen again until she runs into Woody at the fair in Toy Story 4.

But what happens between those points? How does Bo become so confident and skilled on her own, what is her journey? This would be a perfect spin-off movie as it wouldn't rely on characters that are already in the existing world, providing something totally new with fresh toys and humans affecting her journey.

5 Couldn't: Bullseye

Bullseye might be a very popular character from the franchise, but that doesn't mean the beloved horse could pull off his own movie. The main reason for that is the fact that Bullseye doesn't talk, which would make a full movie quite difficult for Pixar to pull off.

While Bullseye brings brilliant emotion to things through his facial features, it is hard to carry an entire movie around just that. However, any spin-off film for this franchise would certainly benefit from Bullseye still being part of the movie.

4 Could: Slinky Dog

Slinky Dog is the right-hand man of Woody throughout the movies and while he never gets as much focus as other characters, there is no doubt that he has tons of personality. He can bring humor and emotion to his scenes and that varied personality makes him perfect for a lead role.

He's a fantastic character and one that audiences would really love to learn more about. Whether it's set in the past or the future, Slinky Dog would be a fun lead character for a spin-off movie as a true hero of the hour.

3 Couldn't: Mr. Potato Head

Mr. Potato Head has been involved in all of the Toy Story films and he's always brought a lot of humor. While he can be a little grumpy at times, he always ends up being won over by Woody and he remembers that his focus is on being a great friend.

However, this is one character that is just far better served as a supporting role and not the lead. The original movies already spent a good chunk of time developing his character, therefore an extra movie would feel like a waste.

2 Could: Jessie

The Toy Story franchise has always had a couple of big female characters, with Bo Peep and Jessie playing significant roles in the films. However, the franchise has always been driven by Woody and Buzz, which is why a spin-off movie led to by Jessie would be a perfect change of pace.

A movie for Jessie could go right back to the start of her tale and perhaps showcase up until when she gets left, which is highlighted in Toy Story 2. Or, the story could kick on from the end of Toy Story 4, which would also be interesting as well. Either way, she's certainly a strong enough character to carry a movie.

1 Couldn't: Hamm

Hamm is a brilliant character that has always been popular, but the reason he couldn't carry a spin-off movie is purely down to how grumpy he is. The moneybox has some hilarious one-liners that are especially great for the adult audiences, but in terms of having a full movie, it wouldn't translate.

The main reason for that is having a grumpy lead character doesn't exactly scream 'child-friendly Pixar movie.' Because of that, Hamm is very much better off as a supporting character, and not the lead.
