One of the most beloved characters in the entire MCU is Agent Phil Coulson who began his journey in Iron Man all the way back in 2008. Being an original character for the live-action franchise, Coulson quickly became a fan-favorite as he became the introduction to SHIELD which has come to play a large role in the MCU. Despite being brutally killed by Loki in The Avengers, fans were not ready to say goodbye to the beloved spy. Through an ambitious campaign called #CoulsonLives, the higher-ups at Marvel heard the call and decided to revive Coulson by having him lead his own TV show, Agents of SHIELD.
Coulson’s arc within the MCU got further fleshed out thanks to the Marvel TV (now rebranded as Marvel TV Studios) series that went on for 7 seasons which concluded this year. The spy drama holds the title as Marvel’s longest-running show of all time. Throughout the run, Coulson went from being a high-ranking agent to then becoming the director of SHIELD and so much more. With that said, these are the 10 most hilarious Coulson memes of all time.
10 One Coulson And One Coulson Only
The biggest reason why Coulson has become such a loved character by fans is because of what Clark Gregg has brought to the role. Through his wit and charm, Coulson’s everyday-man presence became like a representative for the audience as he acted in many ways as the eyes and ears for them.
His portrayal of Coulson caught fans so much that he was eventually introduced into the comics. There is no better statement to make that a character is yours when an actor gets to reprise the role in outside projects like animated shows and video games.
9 The Romance That Could Have Been
One of the more adorable aspects of Coulson that became abundantly clear in The Avengers was his passion for Captain America. As Steve Rogers was getting used to now living in the 21st century, Coulson had his fanboy moments around the super-soldier. Within the fandom, it didn’t take long for some viewers to begin shipping Coulson and Steve.
Even though Coulson kept his cool most of the time around Rogers, this meme sums up how he was actually feeling anytime he was with the Captain. If only it hadn’t been for a certain Asgardian villain, Coulson and Steve could have gotten to bond a lot more.
8 Jealous Coulson
One quality that fans never got to see a lot of with Coulson was jealousy. Coulson was a lot of things, but jealous was never one of them. Most of the time, he came off as a witty, nerdy, and determined individual who was focused on getting the job done. However, imagine if Coulson got to be a little petty.
The idea that he would claim Steve as his if Mockingbird did a personality quiz that determined which Avenger they could date is spot-on. Additionally, if Bobbi Morse was going to get together with any of them, it’s obviously Hawkeye.
7 Reunited And It Feels So Good
Ever since he was stabbed by Loki’s scepter, Coulson and the iconic foe hasn’t shared the screen together. It’s understandable why he wouldn’t want to cross paths with Thor’s brother after what happened in The Avengers.
However, Coulson would probably feel a bit different if he found out that Loki can shape-shift into anyone, anyone that he wants. If this meme actually happened as a scenario, perhaps Coulson would be a little forgiving of what Loki did to him.
6 Coulson Just Being Present
As much as Coulson loves Captain America, their first encounter was 100% awkward, even if he didn’t intend it to be. Letting someone, who had been asleep for over 70 years, know that they were being watched while they were being released from suspended animation can be weird. While trying to make a good first impression, Coulson was a little too upfront about him observing the captain while being asleep.
That’s why it’s important to remember that Coulson never watches anyone sleep. He is simply present while they’re unconscious and making sure that someone is OK.
5 SHIELD For Halloween
If Agents of SHIELD made any costume iconic, it was the traditional super-spy outfit that anyone can get for themselves. In many ways, they made the spy-look cooler than it has previously been.
By getting a suit, anyone can dress up as an Agent of SHIELD for Halloween. Imagine doing Trick-or-Treating and instead ask the person at the door if they're ready to talk about the Avengers Initiative. That might lead to more candy, especially if it's a Marvel fan opening the door.
4 Nerdy Coulson Is The Best Coulson
Another highlight of Coulson’s nerdy side for Captain America is the infamous vintage trading cards. Following his death, Nick Fury reveals a bloody pile of them to the Captain, saying that Coulson never got them signed by Rogers.
Even though Coulson never had them in his pocket when he died, Fury did what he had to do to get the Avengers to get together. But imagine if only Coulson had, in a Carly Rae Jensen tone, gotten to ask Rogers to sign them.
3 The Spinoff Marvel Should Have Made
With all the cute moments between them, there should have been a spinoff of some kind for Captain America and Coulson. While it would have prevented Agents of SHIELD to ever happen, a duo-series focused on Rogers and Coulson would have been hilarious and exciting.
Because Coulson was always as collected as he was in past movies like Iron Man 2 and Thor, it made his obsession with the Captain more precious. This meme is definitely what Coulson was feeling on the inside whenever he was just looking as Rogers.
2 You Simply Don’t Kill Coulson
Whenever dealing with a comic book property, it’s important to know that death is not always as set in stone as it usually is. Through alien technology, magic, and super-powers, a dead character doesn’t always stay dead.
If anyone in the MCU proved that point, it was Coulson. More than once Coulson could have laughed at death as if it was nothing. Despite dying several seasons later, Coulson still managed to come back in one form and another.
1 SHIELD’s Most Devoted Agent
SHIELD is a powerful force to be reckoned with, including when it comes to what their full name actually spells out. While most people say SHIELD, it’s because it’s literally a lot easier than having to say that someone is from the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. As Grant Ward said it in the Agents of SHIELD pilot, someone truly did want their name to spell out SHIELD.
It always became funny whenever any of the actors associated with the spy organization had to be tested in interviews if they knew what SHIELD stood for. Out of everyone in the MCU family knows it by heart, Gregg is that person. To say that Gregg is SHIELD’s most devoted agent is an understatement.
