Klaus Mikaelson, the Original Big Bad, established a heavy legacy throughout his journey from The Vampire Diaries to The Originals. The 1000-year-old vampire arrived in Mystic Falls to terrorize Elena and her friends during season 2 of TVD. After unleashing his werewolf lineage from the confines of a magical curse, Klaus grew ever more powerful — though soon found himself battling opponents with even stronger supernatural abilities.
The road to redemption wasn't smooth-sailing for Klaus, as he struggled with his inner demons and his desire for control over New Orleans. Significant moments, such as the birth of his daughter and his relationship with Caroline, stand out as pivotal plot points in his arc from villain to martyr.
10 Klaus Comes To Town
Klaus arrived in Mystic Falls with a fearsome reputation that preceded him. The Original hybrid was first mentioned early in season 2, before confronting Bonnie in an epic showdown while possessing the body of Alaric Saltzman.
Klaus appeared in the flesh for the first time in the self-titled episode "Klaus." He wasted little time in establishing himself as one of the show's most significant Big Bads by targeting Elena Gilbert and her friends.
9 Breaking The Curse
Upon arriving in Mystic Falls, Klaus quickly set about fulfilling a millennia-long mission to remove his mother's curse. In season 2's "The Sun Also Rises," the Original uses Elena's blood to unleash his werewolf side in a tragic sacrificial ritual that claims the life of her aunt Jenna.
Using a witch, werewolf, vampire, and the Petrova doppelganger, as well as the coveted moonstone, Klaus severs the magical restrictions of his abilities. He becomes the world's first hybrid and an even more formidable foe for the Salvatores.
8 The Mikaelson Family Reunites
Klaus' crimes literally return to haunt him during season 3 of The Vampire Diaries. "Bringing Out The Dead" sees the Mikaelson family reunite after centuries of being sealed away in coffins. Klaus' siblings are far from happy to see him, though the true threat proves to be their mother Esther.
The Originals gather together for a celebratory ball in the following episode "Dangerous Liaisons." Esther seeks out Elena for her help in taking down her undead children, shattering the Mikaelsons once more.
7 Defeated At Last
Throughout season 2 and 3, Klaus seemed like an unstoppable enemy for the Mystic Falls gang. "Before Sunset" features the hybrid finally being taken down when he tries to drain Elena's blood and flee from the enhanced Original Alaric.
Stefan and Damon restrain Klaus while Bonnie finishes a powerful spell that stops the hybrid's heart. Finally, Klaus gets his comeuppance — although his desiccated imprisonment does not last long.
6 Relationship With Caroline
Fans witnessed the first steps towards redemption for Klaus when he fell in love with Caroline. Klaus saves the blonde vampire's life when she is bitten by a werewolf. The two dance around their feelings for each throughout season 4, which ends with Klaus saying farewell before leaving for New Orleans.
Their goodbye in "Graduation" isn't the last viewers saw of Klaroline, however. The couple gives into their chemistry in season 5's "500 Years Of Solitude," before guest-starring on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals respectively.
5 Hello To New Orleans
Klaus' journey in The Originals begins with his return to New Orleans. He finds himself disturbed by the changes in the French Quarter and jealous of Marcel's new reign. Envious, he sets himself a new mission: take back his stolen kingdom from his protege.
Dominion over New Orleans drives the first season of this Vampire Diaries spin-off. Witches, werewolves, and vampires fight in a bloody battle for control of the city, with the Original family at the center of the drama.
4 The Birth Of Hope
The birth of Klaus and Hayley's daughter, Hope, was a turning point in the hybrid's story that saw him gradually embrace his redemption arc. Alas, Hope's birth was surrounded by typical Mikaelson drama. Newborn and helpless, the Harvest witches attempt to sacrifice the baby before she is saved by her family.
Klaus and Hayley are forced to send their daughter away with Rebekah to keep her safe from the warring factions within New Orleans' supernatural community. Thankfully, the father-daughter duo is reunited during season 2.
3 Sacrificing Himself For His Family
Klaus makes a dedicated sacrifice to protect his family during season 3 of The Originals. To save their lives, Freya traps the Mikaelson siblings inside the Chambre de Chasse and links them to Klaus. The hybrid is put on trial for his long list of crimes before sentenced to a fate worse than death by Marcel.
Marcel stabs his mentor with Papa Tunde's blade and holds him captive for five years, depriving him of seeing his daughter. Klaus eventually escapes with Freya's help before reuniting with his family.
2 Absorbing The Hollow
The redemption arc of the Original hybrid continues in season 4 and 5 when Klaus makes more sacrifices for Hope. The Mikaelsons each absorb a piece of the Hollow to save Hope's life, condemning them to an eternity apart. In season 5, Klaus takes the full force of the evil entity when it threatens his daughter once more.
Klaus' fight against the Hollow consumed his journey towards the end of The Originals. A witch with unparalleled power, the Hollow proved too strong an enemy for even Klaus and the Mikaelsons to defeat.
1 Klaus Dies With Elijah
Klaus' story comes full circle in the series finale "When The Saints Go Marching In." Facing the inevitable, the hybrid makes his tearful farewells to Hope and his family before dying alongside his brother Elijah, marking the culmination of his road to redemption.
Klaus and Elijah were the first members of the Mikaelson family to appear in the story; it was a fitting resolution to conclude their saga with the same duo. The death of Klaus, as well as these other major plot events in his journey throughout The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, are poignant moments in his arc from both series.
