Justice League: The Snyder Cut Makes a Major Change to the Look of the Knightmare

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice's Knightmare sequence was a hit with fans, but footage from Justice League's Snyder Cut looks noticeably different. Batman V Superman was a divisive film upon release, and remains one now, over four years later. As with many Zack Snyder movies though, those who love Batman V Superman tend to really, really love it. Those that enjoyed the film tended to leave it with one big question that rose up over all: what the heck was going on during what's been dubbed  the "Knightmare" scene?

In the Knightmare, Bruce Wayne has a vision while asleep of a future dystopia in which, after the death of Lois Lane, Superman fell victim to the Anti-Life Equation concocted by Darkseid, eliminating his free will. With nothing left to live and be a hero for, Superman has aligned with Darkseid's forces, becoming a tyrannical overlord of the Earth, and murdering those who oppose his rule without hesitation. Naturally, Batman is the leader of a resistance movement attempting to take down the Last Son of Krypton. After the Knightmare ends, Bruce is briefly visited by The Flash, traveling back from the future.

While many fans immediately saw parallels to the plot of the then quite recent hit video game Injustice: Gods Among Us, the Knightmare remained a big question mark as to what exactly it meant for the future of the DCEU. Then of course Snyder left the franchise, and his plan went with him. The theatrical cut of Justice League ignored the Knightmare storyline, but while the Snyder Cut expands on it, it appears to be in a different way, at least visually.

Fans of Batman V Superman will instantly recall that the Knightmare sequence found in that film was very brightly lit, almost as if it was a particularly sunny day out. The image was cast in a noticeable reddish-orange hue as well, leading to a visual look that just helped make the sequence even more memorable overall. Yet, during glimpses of what's pretty clearly the Knightmare time period in the trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League, the colors are much less saturated, and the image is much darker overall than the original Knightmare scene.

One possible explanation for this change is that what's seen in Justice League is at a different point in the Knightmare timeline than that shown in Batman V Superman. With a less exacting director at the helm, one might wonder if it was a simple continuity error, but Snyder, despite what his detractors might allege, is someone who meticulously plots out every aspect of his films, especially their visual style.

For example, he closely matched scenes from Man of Steel's Metropolis battle to new scenes set concurrently with Bruce Wayne in Batman V Superman, to ensure there was no discernible clue that one was looking at footage from two different films. While it's also impossible that the Snyder Cut footage seen so far doesn't have a final color grading yet, if that's not the case, there's most definitively a specific reason why Snyder went this differing route with the Knightmare.
