5 Reasons Rachel Was Better Than Monica (& 5 Monica Was Better)

The popular 90's sitcom Friends left a lasting legacy in television history with flawed, quirky, relatable characters who became as iconic as the show itself. Monica Geller and Rachel Green, played respectively by Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston, were integral to the group of 20-something bachelors and bachelorettes around whose lives the series revolved.

Monica and Rachel were best friends on the show, much like Ross and Chandler. Both had their drawbacks, as well as several amazing qualities that made the characters stand out. Here why Rachel was better than Monica in some ways, and vice versa.

10 Rachel: Less Competitive

Rachel was not half as competitive as Monica, who could drive people crazy with her need to come out on top at everything. This made Rachel an easier friend.

Although Rachel realized that her career was important to her with time, and she too could be quite self-centered, she would never be as ambitious as Monica when it came to trivial matters like winning an on the spot quiz.

9 Monica: Go-Getter

From beating people in table tennis to getting bumped to first class, Monica had to be the first in everything she did. While this did make her unpopular at times, especially at work, it also helped her get what she wanted, which in hindsight, was admirable.

Monica went through some tough times in her career, but managed to finally run her own kitchen at a well-known restaurant. She was a tough taskmaster no doubt, but that's what helped her in achieving her dream job.

8 Rachel: Less Obsessive

Rachel did not obsess over little things the way Monica did. Yes, she did become a little obsessive with Ross when she boarded a plane to tell him she loved him right before his wedding, and also with seducing Joshua, her customer at the fashion store. But she wasn't naturally obsessive like Monica.

Anyone can obsess over this and that at some point in life, as did Rachel. But she did not stay anxious and tense, as Monica often did when something didn't go according to her plans.

7 Monica: Cleanliness Freak

Monica was obsessed with cleanliness, one of the biggest quirks of her character on the show. Even the tiniest dot on a cushion would drive her nuts, and she in turn would drive anyone around her crazy.

However, like most things, Monica's obsession with cleaning helped her keep a very clean house, despite having a great variety of people hang out at her place at all hours, many of whom that were not particularly clean.

6 Rachel: Less Controlling

Rachel was much less controlling than Monica was. In fact, when she was first introduced, she was almost clueless about life, having lived off her wealthy dad's credit cards until that moment.

However, although she soon took charge of her own life, she was never concerned with controlling everyone around her and left them to their devices, making her more socially comfortable than her best friend.

5 Monica: Amazing Hostess/Chef

Monica was an amazing chef, and was the heart and soul of all the many meals that the gang dug into as they hung out in her apartment. In fact, although one of the most memorable Thanksgiving episodes centered on how she hated having to consider every person's individual preferences while cooking, she enjoyed playing hostess.

Monica's need to excel in whatever she did made her want to stand out as a hostess so that people would gravitate towards her whenever there was a party or a get-together. The meals, the chaotic parties, and the six friends lazing around at her apartment--which was what was happening much of the time-- were really some of the most fun episodes in the series.

4 Rachel: More Spontaneous

Rachel led a more free, spontaneous life than Monica. She didn't plan her life down to the letter or have specific targets to achieve. Rather, she went with the flow and accepted life as it happened.

Of course, Rachel's spontaneity only started after she joined the gang. Before that, she lived in a protected cocoon with her rich parents and followed a path generally understood to be acceptable in the snobbish society she belonged to at the time.

3 Monica: More Organized

A running gag about Monica was how she had everything organized down to the last detail. She even categorized towels according to who would use them. However, eccentric as that might sound, her being organized was what brought a semblance of order into the lives of the others.

Monica was also a rule follower, which could sometimes be tedious for the rest of the friends, but that made her better focused and more disciplined. Having goals to attain and rules to follow was something that kept Monica steady.

2 Rachel: Super Stylish

Rachel was definitely one of the most fashionable of the gang with the best dressing sense. Some of her outfits from the show became as iconic as her, and more importantly, she even set the trend for the Rachel haircut.

When Rachel had to start living independently, she had to find a job, and after a disastrous stint at the coffee house, she realized that the one thing she was really good at was fashion. She then managed to find bit jobs in the fashion industry until she got quite an important position in her office.

1 Monica: More Practical

Monica was possibly the most practical friend in the gang. She believed in planning things ahead and also took care to have backups or contingencies in the event of something not going according to plan.

Before her wedding, Monica took the trouble to jot down all the things that could possibly go wrong. Being farsighted allowed her to organize events and throw parties where everything was usually in order. The other friends could simply trust her to pull off big events without a hitch, although she did drive them crazy in the process.
