Pixar: 5 Sequels We'd Still Love To See (& 5 Reasons To Get Hyped For Their New IPs)

With the release of Toy Story in 1995, Pixar became a ground-breaking new voice in the world of animated films. For years, the studio has been delivering exciting, wonderful, and touching stories that entertain audiences of all ages. There is always excitement about what they will do next.

Given their incredible success over the years, it's no surprise that some of their films have become franchises. Toy Story, Cars, Monsters Inc., and more have spawned sequels that have populated much of Pixar's output recently. However, there are signs they could be returning to original films. The question then becomes if fans would rather see Pixar tackle more sequels or branch out with new stories.

10 Sequel: A Bugs Life (1998)

Pixar's second release, A Bug's Life never reached the popularity of some of Pixar's other films. However, this underrated adventure is a lot of fun, exploring the lives of bugs while also doing a fun riff on the Seven Samurai story.

Though it has been more than two decades since the first film was released, a sequel could still work. There seems to be so much more to explore about this world and perhaps they could do another fun take on an old adventure story.

9 New Stuff: Soul

Although Pixar already released Onward this year, fans might be getting a second Pixar movie as well. Soul was originally set to be released in June but was delayed until November. There are now rumors it could be released on Disney+ instead.

The film will focus on an aspiring jazz musician whose soul separates from his body and travels to the place souls go before inhabiting a body. The mix of a jazz story with an exploration of life in general sounds like the ambitious storytelling Pixar does when they aren't concerned with playing it safe.

8 Sequel: Brave (2012)

Even Pixar is capable of making some missteps and Brave seems to be considered one of them. The fantasy film is set in medieval times and follows a young girl who defies the customs expected of her and makes her own path while trying to undo a curse.

Many audiences found the story to be dull, though there are some bright spots to the film. The lead character Merida is inspiring and the fantasy world is interesting. It feels like there is a great adventure to be had with this character and this setting.

7 New Stuff: Luca

Following Soul's supposed-release this year, the next Pixar film in development in the coming-of-age story, Luca. The film is set in the Italian Rivera and follows two young boys who form a friendship which is threatened by a dark secret one of them is hiding.

The film sounds like a really personal and intimate story that Pixar can really do something amazing with. It also sounds quite different from anything else they have ever done.

6 Sequel: Wall-E (2008)

Even with their established success, Wall-E felt like a bold move for Pixar. Most of the movie works almost as a silent film as we follow the titular robot who is assigned to clean up Earth after humans abandoned it.

We follow Wall-E as he learns about Earth, old musicals, and finds love with another robot. He became one of Pixar's most beloved characters who fans would love to see more of. It's hard to say how the story could continue but surely there is more to explore with this lovable robot.

5 New Stuff: Diminishing Returns

While some Pixar films seem like they are perfectly suited for a sequel, the end result is not always so effective. While there have been entertaining and even brilliant Pixar sequels, few of them have lived up to the original.

It seems like the Toy Story franchise is the only one who knows how to pull off a sequel that improves the series. Perhaps returning to ideas they already worked on is not Pixar's strong suit.

4 Sequel: Inside Out (2015)

After a string of disappointing movies, Pixar showed they still had plenty of brilliant ideas left with the smart and moving Inside Out. The film focuses on a young girl dealing with her family moving to a new town and how her inner emotions like Joy, Anger, and Sadness deal with the change.

Inside Out used its clever premise to deliver countless insightful, hilarious, and heartbreaking moments. It also featured one of the most important messages in a Pixar film. It would be interesting to see how these emotions continue to deal with this young girl as she grows up.

3 New Stuff: Exciting New Worlds

Pixar movies have often been delightful for examining the worlds that could be happening all around us without us ever knowing. Whether it is the toys in our room, the monsters in our closets, or the fish under the sea, its so much fun to explore these worlds.

While there's likely a lot more each of these worlds can explore, we want to see what else is out there. We want to see Pixar come up with inventive and exciting new places, characters, and ways of life we have never seen before.

2 Sequel: Ratatouille (2007)

The premise of a rat who learns how to be a chef sounds like a pretty silly set up for a feature-length film. Leave it to Pixar to take that idea and turn it into a hilarious and inspiring underdog story. Ratatouille is a brilliant piece of storytelling that comes together so beautifully.

The main character of Remy is another charming protagonist in the Pixar catalog. It would be wonderful to see what other kinds of adventures he would get up to now that he has realized his dream.

1 New Stuff: Expand The Universe

It's quite amazing how many iconic movies Pixar has been able to make at this point. For a time, it seemed like every new movie that produced opened up the universe more and showed the kind of ambitious stories they can tell.

As fun as the sequels can be, they do make the Pixar universe seem smaller. Without new original movies being made, Pixar will just be a few ongoing franchises. Fans looking for something new will begin to look elsewhere and the magic of this universe will diminish.
