Creators have improved upon Kylo Ren's lightsaber for Stellan Gios' weapon in Star Wars' The High Republic. The upcoming Star Wars transmedia event project will feature the stories of the High Republic Era when the Republic was at its strongest 200 years before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
Although much changed between the High Republic Era and the most recent events of the sequel trilogy, one constant has been the use of lightsabers as weapons. One of the most infamous lightsabers within the sequel trilogy was Kylo Ren's. More specifically, the red crossguard lightsaber's origins were explained within the comic miniseries The Rise of Kylo Ren, where it was revealed that Kylo bled his Kyber crystal to create the lightsaber, similar to how Darth Vader made his iconic weapon.
Despite the ominous nature of Kylo Ren's lightsaber, StarWars.com reveals that the cross-saber design was considered when creating weapons for the High Republic. In particular, the cross-saber design was debated for the lightsaber of Stellan Gios, one of the characters during the High Republic era and a Jedi Master. However, illustration manager Jeff R. Thomas admits that the look didn't quite have the desired effect that the team wanted. You can check out Stellan's gorgeous lightsaber below:
More specifically, Thomas explains that while his team liked the idea of a crossguard, they also wanted a more practical design. This idea led Thomas to modify his designs before deciding on a crossguard that would activate on command, rather than be open at all times. As a result, while Stellan Gios' lightsaber is a much slimmer weapon than Kylo Ren's, it will still have a similar crossguard effect when activated. Also, the gorgeous weapon not only features a crossguard but is accented in gold and highlights the artistry found within the High Republic Era. That being said, it's good to see designs being reused within the greater Star Wars universe, and it'll be an incredibly fun treat for fans to ascertain what other elements of Kylo Ren's lightsaber map onto Stellan Gios' weapon.
While the noble Stellan Gios certainly contrasts with Kylo Ren, one of the most excellent parts of the Star Wars franchise is its understanding that characters are rarely all good or all evil. Instead, there is a fundamental gray area that most within the Star Wars universe seem to hover in. As such, the use of Kylo Ren's lightsaber in early designs for Stellan Gios' weapon is a nice nod towards this idea and yet another reason for fans to check out Star Wars: The High Republic upon its eventual release.
