Christopher Nolan will go down in history as one of the most original, daring, influential, and brilliant filmmakers of his generation, and with his latest sci-fi epic Tenet, he has once again pushed the cinematic boundaries of blockbuster film. While the film is not perfect and has some emotional issues and some arguable narrative problems, it is an exhilarating, breakneck theatrical experience.
It is also one with some great lines that are either delivered perfectly by the great, if not underdeveloped characters played by a brilliant cast, or are just so suave that they have and will stick in fans' minds for a long while to come.
10 "We All Believe We'd Run Into That Burning Building. But Until We Feel That Heat, We Can Never Know. You Do."
The promotional material for Tenet may be a prime example of giving too much away and taking away from the experience a bit. Imagine if audiences believe Nolan was doing a Bond-esque espionage flick and then all the time inversion stuff revealed itself during the movie.
This quote from a Tenet agent is featured in the trailers, and that sticks out as one of the best, albeit one of the few representations of who the Protagonist is and his utter dedication to the cause, something that could get explored in a sequel.
9 "We Live In A Twilight World. There Are No Friends At Dusk."
This quote is one said many times throughout the film, and is a secret code phrase used to gain access and makes sure the characters are talking to the right people. It is also quite funny that Twilight gets mentioned in a Robert Pattinson movie.
The quote has no real substantial impact on the plot; it is merely a device used in the spy game to ensure security and secrecy. It just so happens to be an insanely cool quote, living up to the strong suit game in the movie.
8 "No, Not Yet."
The relationship between Kat and the Protagonist in the film is one that has drawn some criticism. Why does the Protagonist care so much for Kat? Is their romance there?
There might be some feelings there, but they are not even in the backseat of the story; they are in the trunk. However, when the unhealthily jealous Sator meets the Protagonist for the first time and asks if he had slept with his wife, the Protagonist calmly delivers this quote that drips of cool. Major props to John David Washington there.
7 "This Is Where Our Worlds Collide."
Speaking of Andrei Sator, he is played by the fantastic Kenneth Branagh in what is a very big performance, with a deep Russian accent. It's one that may be too much for some but is great for many.
This quote is another said from Sator to the Protagonist and is an accurate representation of the time inversion element of the movie, with two separate worlds, one moving forward, one backward, collide.
6 "You Have To Start Looking At The World In A New Way."
Priya is a supporting character in Tenet and an arms dealer who is the mastermind behind a big operation that sells inverted weapons and is someone who leads the Protagonist on a couple of times.
She says this quote to him, and it is one of many that can be seen as Nolan talking to the audience. There is no doubting this film's originality and uniqueness; it does demand a lot from the viewer. But, even ignoring that, it is a piece of advice the Protagonist must take on if he has to any hope in his journey to stop Sator.
5 "That Part Is, A Little Dramatic."
Robert Pattinson is a genuinely fantastic actor. Over the past decade, he has proven himself time and time again, and he seems to be getting rewarded with recognition from mainstream audiences finally.
He is excellent here with what he gets given, and is so incredibly sophisticated and Bond-like, just as John David Washington is. This line referring to the plane crash is just delivered so memorably, and it is aided by how much it is used leading up to the film.
4 "Bold I'm Fine With, I Was Afraid You Were Going To Say Nuts."
Himesh Patel is another actor who has a small role in the film, aiding Neil and the Protagonist in the plane crash at Oslo airport, and he has this line which sums up a lot of the feelings fans had in the movie.
Crashing a plane in a movie for spectacle is a bold move. Crashing a plane in real life, for a film for spectacle is nuts, yet Nolan pulls it off, just as he does with so many insane things in this and other of his movies.
3 "I'll See You In The Beginning, Friend."
The climax of the movie is breathtaking and extremely overwhelming, dishing out hard to comprehend visuals, an overload of auditory stimulation, and a bunch of information at the end.
After retrieving the algorithm, the Protagonist, Neil, and Ives talk about hiding the separate pieces, before it gets revealed Neil is the one with the red string backpack. He is in his own time, from the Protagonist who will go on to meet the younger Neil and have many adventures, something that sounds like incredible fun.
2 "What's happened, happened, it's an expression of faith in the mechanics of the world, it's not an excuse for doing nothing."
The time inversion aspect of Tenet was undoubtedly the most fascinating thing about the movie going into it. It needs multiple viewings to grasp fully, and with all the twists and turns that go along with it, it can all get overwhelming.
That is the case as it pertains to Neil, who raises many questions with his time loop, and who says this quote to the Protagonist when he inquires about changing the course of time and the effects of doing so. It isn't very clear, and perhaps even Neil does not understand, but he must do his duty and have faith that all will work out.
1 "Don't Try To Understand It. Feel It."
Clémence Poesy plays scientist Laura, a character who appears in one crucial scene in which the Protagonist goes to see her and gets the concept of time inversion, and the changing of entropies explained to him.
Laura says this quote, and it pretty much sums the whole movie up. Nolan trusts the audience to figure out stuff on their own and go on the journey with him. At the same time, he will always look at film as a medium to be experiential, to be felt, and loved in as big and as beautiful a way as possible. It is also accurate in that nobody understands this movie the first time around; the only hope is to feel it.
