Before it was a hit series on the CW, The Vampire Diaries had already accrued a large fanbase due to the novels. Although they still mainly focus on the lives of Elena Gilbert and her friends, the narrative wasn't always the same as the show. In fact, there were quite a few differences.
For one, there were plenty of characters who were substituted or didn't make it to the screen adaptations. While the writers may argue that these characters aren't included because they are minor, a lot of fans will agree that all characters and their deaths had a major impact on the plot.
10 Davos
One character that didn't make it into the tv series was Davos. While he doesn't make a physical appearance in the novels, the readers still learn a lot about him. Known as one of the "Old Ones," Davos was a pureblood vampire who was meant to be extremely powerful and dangerous.
However, in Unseen, Elena reveals to Jack that she, Stefan, and Meredith had killed him while on their quest to defeat the "Old Ones." Some have suggested that his television counterpart may be Kol Mikaelson but that is not definite.
9 Ethan Crane
Although many believe his tv counterpart was similar to Shane or Wes, another character that didn't make it into the show was Ethan Crane. Introduced in The Hunters: Moonsong, Ethan was known as the leader of the Vitale society, who planned to resurrect Klaus after his death at the hands of Elena and the other Spirits.
By Destiny Rising, Ethan's plan succeeds and Klaus is brought back to life. However, Ethan wasn't rewarded for his loyalty. In fact, it was the opposite as Klaus ended up decapitating him. Most people would say this was sort of karmic retribution for the torment he put the gang through.
8 Siobhan
Another "Old One" that met their demise in the novels was Siobhan. As book fans know, Siobhan was a powerful, pureblood vampire and the antagonist of The Salvation: Unspoken. The readers are told that Siobhan was a very cunning and intelligent person, who would not hesitate to kill someone if given the chance.
Although it appeared that she would help Elena and her friends kill Jack, she betrayed them for her own selfish motives. As a result, Siobhan ends up getting killed when Elena stakes her in the heart.
7 Jacob Smallwood
One other change the tv writers made from the books was the creation of George Lockwood. As many fans know, George was the first known werewolf that belonged to the Lockwoods. He was also the main reason why Katherine Pierce managed to escape Mystic Falls in the first place and why she evaded Klaus for so long.
However, fans never learned what happened to him afterward. On the other hand, the books were a different matter altogether. Otherwise known as Jacob Smallwood, the werewolf caused a lot of trouble for the residents of Fell's Church. After discovering he was responsible for the deaths of several women, Thomas and Honoria Fell then killed him with silver bullets. He remains buried in the graveyard at the bottom of the hill.
6 Celine
Another "Old One" that met their demise in the novels was Celine, who was just as powerful and strong as her 'siblings.' Mainly seen in The Salvation: Unseen, Elena and her friends were tasked with hunting down the cold and demonic pureblood to finish their quest of destroying the Old Ones.
Celine was noted to be a very sinister villain, having lived through centuries and being responsible for the rise and fall of many civilizations. However, she was also destroyed by Stefan and Meredith when they poisoned her with the sacred blood of the Principal Guardian. Some fans have managed to draw parallels to Rebekah and Lily but this is not confirmed.
5 Rosalyn Cartwright
While the show's writers decided to keep in the plot about Katherine and Stefan's 'romance,' one aspect they didn't include was the murder of Rosalyn Cartwright. In Stefan's Diaries, it was revealed that Stefan had been engaged to Rosalyn shortly after she turned sixteen.
However, it was later revealed that she had been murdered after Stefan discovered that she had her throat torn out. It turned out that Katherine was responsible for her death as she killed her in a fit of jealousy. Rosalyn's death served to show another level to Katherine's psychotic ways.
4 Solomon
Another character that had a major impact on the novels was Solomon. Not only was Solomon an Old One but he can be considered one of the most powerful and threatening antagonists due to his shapeshifting abilities. On several occasions, Solomon has managed to kill numerous characters by transferring his essence into their bodies.
Unfortunately for him, the gang manages to figure out he is using a psychic link and manages to find out where he is hiding. After Bonnie counters his powers, Stefan then kills him with Elena's blood. Interestingly, some fans have drawn parallels between him and Silas but it is not confirmed if this is where the inspiration came from.
3 Cristian Sulez
Another character that wasn't included in the television series was Cristian Sulez. Known as Meredith's twin brother, Cristian was a vampire who was kidnapped by Klaus when he was just a child. Cristian eventually became an antagonist after Klaus made him an Old One.
However, Cristian ended up meeting his demise when Meredith stakes him. Although they didn't know each other for long, Cristian manages to bring Meredith some comfort before he died by telling her their father would be proud of her. It makes fans wish the show could have at least included more familial relationships for the supporting characters.
2 Elena Gilbert
Although Elena technically died when she transitioned into a vampire, there wasn't exactly a time where she was physically gone in the show. However, the books are a different matter altogether. In The Fury, Elena ends up sacrificing herself to save the Salvatore brothers after Katherine arrived in Fell's Church to get revenge.
Just before she dies, Elena helps to mend the bond between Stefan and Damon by getting them to put their feud to bed. She was only brought back to life in Dark Reunion, which took place six months after her death. Who knows how Damon would have reacted if this actually happened in the series?
1 Klaus
One character who didn't meet his demise during the show was Klaus. While Klaus Mikaelson was a popular character in the show (to the point that he got a spin-off), the book gave off a different impression. Also known as one of the "Old Ones," Klaus was one of the most dangerous and violent pureblood vampires.
He also seemed to be very strong and one of the gang's toughest opponents as one of the final showdowns saw them struggle to defeat him. Eventually, Klaus met his demise in The Hunters: Destiny Rising when he was poisoned after drinking Elena's blood. There was literally no redeeming qualities to him.
