WandaVision Theory: Scarlet Witch Creates A New Captain Marvel

The trailer for WandaVision might tease that Scarlet Witch creates a new Captain Marvel by giving Monica Rambeau her powers. Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will elevate the roles of several previously supporting characters thanks primarily to Disney+. With WandaVision, Scarlet Witch and Vision will be the stars of their own TV show, but it will also bring back several other familiar faces, such as Monica Rambeau.

Audiences first met Monica in Captain Marvel last year, where Akira Akbar played a young version of Luitenent Trouble in 1995. Since almost 30 years have passed in the MCU since then, Monica will return as an adult in WandaVision, played by Teyonah Parris. Ever since it was announced that Monica was returning for WandaVision, fans have been busy theorizing what role she will have. Set photos revealed that Monica works for SWORD - Nick Fury's space-focused SHIELD replacement - but otherwise her role has yet to be defined.

One key detail that has been the subject of speculation is the status of Monica's superpowers in WandaVision. In the comics, Monica is a powerful and prominent superhero who has been known as Spectrum, Photon, Pulsar, and Captain Marvel (before Carol Danvers). While it isn't known what power levels Monica may or may not have in WandaVision, she will likely have an important role in the series. The first trailer for WandaVision only included a small glimpse at adult Monica, but it still offered an intriguing tease. Could Scarlet Witch be responsible for giving Monica her powers?

Marvel Comics introduced Monica Rambeau back in 1982 as a cop in New Orleans. One of her cases saw Monica attempt to prevent the creation of a superweapon. While investigating the case, Monica was exposed to extra-dimensional energy and gave her superpowers. Monica received the power to transform herself into any form of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum. In addition to transforming her body into forms of energy, Monica also has the ability to control them while she is such a state. However, she can only be and control one form of energy at a time despite having access to much more. On various occasions, Monica has used her energy manipulation to appear invisible, make it look as though she is someone else, become intangible, and fire energy blasts. Beyond her unique power set, Monica also has a wide variety of traditional superpowers like flight and near immortality.

As far as WandaVision is considered, the key to Monica's powers is the connection to extra-dimensional energy. The trailer heavily implies that Wanda and Vision's fake life is happening in a pocket dimension that Wanda created within the main reality. This could be a place with extra-dimensional energy or the MCU equivalent. Since WandaVision is also confirmed to lead into the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Monica's extra-dimensional powers could be tied to this storyline as well.

The first official look at adult Monica Rambeau in WandaVision doesn't come until the very end of the trailer. The footage shows Monica flying backward, but not by her own power. She is sent through what looks to be a barrier or portal between universes/realities. It is already believed that Wanda creates the new reality she and Vision are living in, so it would stand to reason that she could've created the barrier between it and the real world too. The trailer also shows Scarlet Witch easily manipulating various parts of the reality. Since Monica isn't flying backward on her own, it is likely that Wanda is responsible for her sudden exit.

When Monica arrives or returns to the real world, the high-speed fall doesn't appear to phase her at all. In fact, the look in her eyes makes it seem as though she's changed and realizes a newfound power. It is possible that this is because interacting with Scarlet Witch and her alternate reality is what gives Monica her powers. Wanda doesn't even have to knowingly give Monica superpowers, as part of WandaVision can explore how she doesn't fully control her own abilities. It could even be that passing through the barrier is when Monica is hit with a rare form of dimensional energy and grants her powers as a result.

If this is the route that the MCU goes, it could be a smart way of combining elements of Monica's comic book origin and key pieces of the MCU mythology. Instead of random extra-dimensional energy from a small villain, Monica's powers can now be tied to Scarlet Witch and possibly the multiverse and/or Infinity Stones (since Wanda's powers came from the Mind Stone). Additionally, having Monica get her powers from Scarlet Witch makes it even more clear why she is part of WandaVision.

One question that this theory does raise, though, is how/when/why Monica Rambeau enters Scarlet Witch's reality. With Monica's powers, she theoretically could be uniquely equipped to enter a different reality. However, this would require Monica to already have her powers. Even though WandaVision will be longer than any MCU movie, there still probably isn't enough time available to tell Monica's origin unless it is tied to the central story in some way. Skipping Monica's origin would be a major event to happen offscreen, so WandaVision and the MCU may be better off connecting it to Scarlet Witch.

Following her appearance in WandaVision, it is expected that Monica Rambeau will return in Captain Marvel 2. The sequel's writer Jac Schaeffer is the head writer on WandaVision and Teyonah Parris has already worked with director Nia DaCosta too. But, her role in the Disney+ show and the brief footage we've seen of her could provide added context to her return.

When Monica returns to the main MCU reality, the WandaVision trailer shows her surrounded by SWORD agents. Since set photos already revealed that Monica will be part of Fury's organization, the common thought has been that she'll be one of their agents from the start. However, the WandaVision trailer could point Monica's story in a different direction. It is possible that Monica enters Wanda's reality on her own, possibly by accident, and is then discovered by SWORD when she is thrown out. If this is the case and she emerges with powers, her recruitment to SWORD makes even more sense.

SWORD is expected to play a part in Captain Marvel 2 as well, so this can be where Monica re-enters the picture. Of course, her return in the sequel will also mean a reunion with Captain Marvel is in store. Monica's MCU future shouldn't be limited to Captain Marvel 2 though. As a character who has gone on to lead the Avengers in the comics, Monica Rambeau could return to at least be part of the next Avengers film. And who knows, maybe WandaVision will even plant the seeds for further adventures with the Ultimates somehow.
