The Academy Awards is the most prestigious honor in Hollywood, and every year, every actor, director, writer, and movie buff is tunes in with excitement to see who takes home the golden statue. When it comes to the top acting categories, there are definitely some actors with a ton of nominations under their belt.
On the flipside, sometimes it only takes one great role to get a nomination. However, all fans know that it's not always the best actors out there that take home the win. It's time to reflect on some of the best talent out there and look at who only has one Oscar nomination - which is totally surprising.
10 Josh Brolin
While fans today might know Josh Brolin from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he definitely deserves more credit for his smaller and critically-acclaimed films. He has one nomination, back in 2008, for his role in Milk.
However, this popular actor has proved his worth in far more than this one flick. No Country For Old Men, W., Inherent Vice, Sicario, and Hail, Caesar! are all movies where his performance was totally swept under the rug.
9 Anthony Perkins
Fans probably recognize this charming (and creepy) face from way back in the day, and they also likely immediately think of Alfred Hitchcock's infamous Psycho.
But, this isn't the movie that garnered Perkins his Oscar nomination! He was nominated in 1957 for Friendly Persuasion. The sole fact that he was completely ignored for bringing Norman Bates to life is definitely a surprise, and a travesty in itself.
8 Steve Carell
Steve Carell might be known as the guy from The Office or The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but he's also one of the most talented and versatile actors of today, and seems to be able to handle any genre, from comedies to dark dramas. He only has one nomination, for his performance in Foxcatcher, back in 2014.
This means that the Academy completely missed out on Welcome to Marwen, Vice, Beautiful Boy, and The Big Short. All of these films featured Carrell in, inarguably, Oscar-worthy performances - and he deserves way more credit.
7 Benedict Cumberbatch
Benedict Cumberbatch has a lot of popular roles, and it's no secret that he absolutely deserved his nomination for The Imitation Game. However, that's all this talented actor has been celebrated for.
He brought Hamlet to life, had a role in 12 Years a Slave, The Other Boleyn Girl, and even starred as Victor Frankenstein in 2011's Frankenstein. He is rightfully one of the most popular actors of today.
6 Charlie Chaplin
For all movie buffs out there, it might seem like an absolute crime that one of the best and most influential actors in history only ever received one Oscar nomination (for The Great Dictator).
From City Lights to Modern Times to A King in New York, pretty much every movie this actor has found himself in was worthy of an Academy Award, and it's a shame he never got more recognition from this prestigious organization.
5 Toni Collette
Toni Collette can do anything - from comedy to horror to drama. She received her one and only Oscar nomination for her role in The Sixth Sense, back in 1999.
Since then, she has only proved time and time again that she is worthy of a second nod from the academy. From Little Miss Sunshine to her haunting role in Ari Aster's Hereditary, these are only two examples of roles that she absolutely crushed.
4 Jake Gyllenhaal
This actor might just be one heartthrob that never ceases to amaze his fans. However, his actual talent and versatility are still grossly underappreciated. Gyllenhaal was nominated for Brokeback Mountain, which was definitely a worthy role.
However, the Academy seemed to ignore his breathtaking and riveting performances in Nightcrawler and Donnie Darko - and that's just to name a couple.
3 Juliette Lewis
Juliette Lewis might have been one of the most popular and versatile actors of the 1990s, and she only received one Oscar nomination, for the 1991 flick Cape Fear, directed by Martin Scorsese.
How she was ignored for all of her quirky yet memorable roles, like From Dusk Till Dawn, Natural Born Killers, and Kalifornia, just shows that the Academy might not be looking in all the right places.
2 Vera Farmiga
In 2020, fans probably recognize this actress from Bates Motel or her recurring roles in the horror series of The Conjuring. Outside of these haunting roles, she scored herself a nomination for Up in the Air (2009).
Again, this versatile actress could actually have been considered for her horror flicks, but also for her brilliance in The Judge, The Departed, or The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, showing that she's far more than just a glorified horror actress.
1 Matthew McConaughey
Matthew McConaughey is probably one of the most highly-regarded actors in Hollywood and has been for quite some time. However, he's only had one chance in the spotlight at the Oscars, for his nomination (and win) for Dallas Buyer's Club.
Interstellar, White Boy Rick, The Wolf of Wall Street, A Time to Kill, and the iconic Dazed and Confused are just a few of his many incredible films, and they are what they are because of McConaughey's stunning, versatile, and memorable performances.
