Harry Potter: Hermione Granger’s Worst Mistakes That Changed Everything

As one of the three main characters in the Harry Potter series, Hermione Granger is overall a good person who does a lot of heroic and brave things. She’s also an extremely well-liked character, and many people look up to her because she stands up for what she believes in and is extremely smart.

However, while Hermione is definitely a hero who marks many great choices, she’s not perfect either. She has her personality flaws, and she makes mistakes just like Harry and Ron. While luckily, most of her mistakes didn’t have too awful of repercussions, there were times when she should have thought ahead more.

9 Obliviating her parents’ memories

This is on the list because it was something that changed Hermione’s life, but it’s not exactly a mistake. She was probably right to do this because she wanted to protect her parents.

However, it was still something that completely changed the lives of her family and anyone that knew them. Hermione did this out of love, and it was super traumatic for her.

8 Treated Luna poorly

Hermione is someone who believes very strongly in facts and logic, so it makes sense she wouldn’t instantly click with someone like Luna who is very fanciful and illogical.

However, she could be rather mean to Luna at times, and she could have been a little less forceful in disagreeing with her. This doesn’t mean Luna was always in the right, but Hermione’s reaction to her did strain their friendship.

7 Didn’t reach out to Harry the summer before fifth year

When Harry is left at the Dursley’s before his fifth year at Hogwarts, he’s desperate for any information about what’s going on in the wizarding world. While Dumbledore instructed Hermione and Ron to not tell Harry anything about the Order of the Phoenix, she could have tried harder to offer support.

Both she and Ron knew that Harry was likely losing it and feeling more and more upset, and the fact that they didn’t try harder to reach out to him, even calling him on the phone, likely contributed to him feeling so cooped up.

6 Only broke rules when it suited her

Hermione is the member of the trio who is the most against breaking school rules. Bt, she actually breaks a ton of them. While she’s generally okay with breaking rules if it’s to save people or fight against Voldemort, she will also sometimes break them when it suits her for less important reasons.

In this way, she does come off as hypocritical and it’s hard to take her seriously.

5 Told McGonagall about the firebolt

When Harry is sent a Firebolt by a mysterious benefactor, Hermione is rightfully worried about where it came from.

It makes sense that she would be upset, and her heart was in the right place by telling McGonagall about the gift. However, it wasn’t her place to meddle, and this definitely impacted her relationship with both Harry and Ron for a time.

4 Got upset when Harry was better at potions than her

When Harry finds the Half-Blood Prince's textbook, he suddenly becomes the best potions student in the school. Hermione is upset about this because she’s used to being the best, and she puts her trust in the traditional rules and ways of doing things.

While it makes sense she felt jealous, it did come off a bit unfair. Also, her jealousy over this made Harry Less likely to listen to the logical criticisms she had about the book.

3 Trying to free house-elves without their consent

Hermione’s desire to help house-elves was a noble one, and it’s a very admirable thing about her. However, she was so young she didn’t quite know how to go about this activism.

By trying to trick house-elves into being freed without their knowledge, she was also not respecting their autonomy. This isn’t to say that the servitude of house-elves was acceptable, but she did need to change her approach.

2 Confounded Cormac McLaggen

This instance is one that illustrates just how hypocritical Hermione could be when it came to rule-breaking. When Cormac tried out for Keeper for the Gryffindor team, Hermione confounded him to ensure Ron would get the position instead. While Cormac was a jerk and also kind of a creep, Hermione was in the wrong to make this decision. It might have led to an overall good outcome, but it did change things.

1 Attacking Ron with the magical birds

Ron made many mistakes when it came to his relationship with Hermione. He was often very rude and jealous, and in many ways, they didn’t even seem like a great match. When he made out with Lavender, it was coming from a place of immaturity, and Hermione was rightfully hurt. However, there’s never a good excuse to attack someone physically like this. No girl or boy should treat a person they like in this way even if they are upset.
