Schitt's Creek: 10 Things That Make No Sense About The Town

Schitt's Creek follows the Rose family as they change throughout the seasons while being stranded in the small and odd town of Schitt's Creek after experiencing financial ruin. The Rose family has to adjust to the new town and their completely differing personalities, but all the characters in Schitt's Creek are quirky and unique and the small town they inhabit reflects their oddities.

Schitt's Creek is a unique town that certainly has its pros and cons, but each and every character has a connection to the town throughout the series. That said, there are certain things about the titular town that really don't hold up to close scrutiny.

10 There's No Grocery Store

There's never really been a grocery store shown on the show as the characters always go to Café Tropical for every meal. There was once a general store that was similar to a convenience store or bodega, but this store goes out of business and is replaced by David's Rose Apothecary. It's a little confusing as to where the characters would get any groceries or supplies in the town without a specific store dedicated to basic groceries.

9 The Only Restaurant Is Café Tropical

This probably isn't true overall as Moira and Johnny did go out to a fancy dinner, although it's not clear if this restaurant is technically located in the town or not.

Either way, Café Tropical is the only restaurant prominently featured on the show, which isn't necessarily out of the ordinary for a small town, but this combined with the fact that the restaurant is never busy is a little odd and doesn't make much sense.

8 Moira Winning City Council

The Rose family start to fit into the town of Schitt's Creek and both Johnny and Moira see an opportunity when a seat on the city council opens up. Johnny wants to run, but Moira ends up running instead and a few episodes see her and Jocelyn running their political campaigns.

Jocelyn becomes disillusioned with the political process when her and Moira almost become enemies, so Moira wins the election presumably because no one else is running. It's not unrealistic for this to happen, but the way it plays out in the show is rushed making the plotline a little confusing.

7 Johnny Technically Owns The Town

Johnny Rose is an interesting and at times confusing character as the successful founder of Rose Video, but he also made some odd financial choices like buying the town of Schitt's Creek as a joke. At the beginning of the show, Johnny tries to sell the town, but other than that plotline it doesn't really seem to matter that technically the Roses own the town besides being able to live at the motel rent free.

6 Roland's Family Founded The Town

This isn't exactly explained in the show, but it's pretty safe to assume that his family founded Schitt's Creek since he shares his unique last name with the town. Roland tends to be a completely clueless character even though he is the mayor of the town. Although Roland sits with the council and makes decisions with them about the town, he never really seems to accomplish much with his position in local politics and being part of the family that the town is named after.

5 Ray Does Everything In The Town

Ray Butani is the go-to person for so many professions in Schitt's Creek and it becomes a running joke throughout the show. While it's not completely unrealistic that someone could be a real estate agent, photographer, travel agent, and Christmas tree salesman, it's highly unlikely and one of the many oddities of Schitt's Creek.

4 There's No Hospital

David Rose begins to panic when he thinks he is having a serious medical issue and can't find a doctor anywhere in the town of Schitt's Creek. Stevie takes David goes to see Ted, the town Veterinarian, and he tells David that he's having a panic attack.

Thankfully, David didn't need medical attention, but being almost an hour away from any real medical attention is concerning in any situation.

3 The Motel Existing In The Town

Schitt's Creek is obviously a very small and calm town and it's confusing that the motel exists in such a town. No one ever really stays at the motel, besides the Roses who are living there without paying, so it doesn't make sense that it is still running when there are so few people staying there. Also, it doesn't do well enough to stay open financially through most of the show so it's odd that it stays open just fine.

2 Everything Is In Walking Distance

Most everything appears to be within walking distance in the town of Schitt's Creek, which isn't out of the ordinary, but it is a little odd that everything is so accessible. Schitt's Creek is a rural small town, but once the characters start to travel through more of the town it still seems that they don't need a car unless they're going to the bigger town of Elmdale. Schitt's Creek looks like it might have some larger farm areas, which would mean more distance between destinations.

1 Schitt's Creek Is In Canada

The show is based on a real-life small town of the same name located in Ontario, Canada, and the production is Canadian, but the town on the show never really specifies a particular location. Although money is discussed frequently on the show, it never really reveals the Canadian currency, so the viewer has a difficult time knowing where Schitt's Creek truly exists.
