Supernatural: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Dean & Castiel's Relationship

While Supernatural has been long focused on the central relationship of the Winchester brothers, there are more characters that have become part of their family. Some of those characters, viewers don't consistently see like Jody. Meanwhile, there are others who have been as frequent in the narrative and on the screen like Jack and Castiel.

Castiel is very close to the Winchesters, especially to Dean. Fans were introduced to the angel, Castiel, when he was given the task to bring Dean back to life and out of hell in Season 4. From then on, their relationship changed and deepened, although not without its struggles. Still, after all these seasons, there are still things about their relationship that don't quite make sense.

10 Why Is Dean So Invested In Castiel's Romantic Exploits?

When Dean finds out that it may be Castiel's last day alive, he makes it his personal business to try to get Castiel laid or at least, some action. Dean takes Castiel to a strip club so that Castiel can have a lap dance. However, Castiel is incredibly awkward and all-seeing, and ends up telling the woman that it wasn't her fault that her dad left, prompting her to throw him out.

Later in a different season, Castiel does get intimate with April (an angel in vessel-form). Dean asks if he had protection, and awkwardly, Castiel answers, "I had my angel blade." When Castiel was linked with Meg, a demon, kissing her passionately, Dean looked on both surprised and impressed.

9 Why Does Castiel Have a More Special Relationship With Dean?

In the beginning of the Dean and Castiel connection, Castiel immediately comes to Dean when he prays/calls for him. An irritated Sam tells Castiel that he had been praying and calling for him, asking if Castiel likes Dean better. Castiel responds, "Dean and I do share a more profound bond. I wasn't going to mention it."

Is this more profound bond before Castiel pulled Dean out of hell? Is it because Dean often seems to bond with people and supernatural beings alike, showing why he was popular with Crowley and Benny? Or--as the subtext has hinted--is it Destiel?

8 Why Does Dean Disrespect Castiel?

From the very beginning of their relationship, Dean has ordered Castiel around, thinking that their trials are more important than his trials in heaven. Castiel tells Dean that he should respect him, after-all he can always drag Dean back to hell. However, this never completely happens.

Although Castiel is all-power (most of the time), Dean continually orders him around, disrespecting him. This is one lesson he learned from his dad, John, and one in which he never really liked receiving. Still, he continues to do it.

7 Why Does Castiel Remain Faithfully Loyal?

Castiel isn't always treated that well by Dean, but he still stays loyal to Dean and Sam. When he doubts many things and his purpose, he still keeps a special spot for Dean. On top of this, Castiel rejects old friends, allies, and teachings, all for the Winchesters.

While Sam is part of this equation, Dean is the main part. Even when Dean disrespects Castiel, Castiel remains faithfully loyal.

6 Why Does Dean Consider Castiel Different Than Other Angels?

Based on Dean's experience with angels, he's not too fond of them. He considers them dicks, even Anna, whom he first met as a human. While Castiel has gotten numerous second-chances, Dean isn't willing to give the other angels a second chance. For much of Anna's time, she had been his ally, but once she's given the order to time-travel to kill their parents, Dean has no sympathy for her.

Castiel had been given orders before, and at one time, tried to be a god, leading to the death of many innocent people. Still, Dean considers Castiel different than the other angels, someone worth saving and giving a second-chance.

5 How Did Dean Become the Alpha?

One would think that Castiel, being a powerful angel, would be the alpha in this friendship/relationship. Castiel is larger than life, can cause someone to become blind if they just glimpse his real image, and can burst radios and ear-drums just by speaking. Still, Dean is the one who commands and calls most of the shots.

While Dean is a great hunter, Castiel isn't always listened to before a battle or investigation. There are times when Castiel claps back at this and asserts himself, but largely, he follows Dean's lead.

4 How Was Castiel Able to Have an Emotional Connection?

Fans learn from Anna that angels don't have the deep emotions that humans have, and as such, they aren't able to have deep attachments either. It's suggested that when Anna becomes an angel again, that she will lose some of her human-emotions and overall humanity.

Castiel has gone through phases of being an angel and a human. Since he is now an angel, how has he be able to hold onto his human side and his human-emotions? These emotions allow him to have a deep connection with Dean, but how has he been able to keep them once his grace has been returned?

3 Why Is Dean So Harsh On Castiel?

Now, there have been times where Dean was incredibly forgiving with Castiel, yet lately that's not the case. Dean doubts Castiel and gets angry at him. For instance, when Castiel killed the demon inhabiting Jack's body, Dean was angry with him. He wasn't even willing to listen to why Castiel did it. If he had, he would have realized that Castiel was rational in his decision.

All this harshness from Dean leads Castiel to leave for a time in Season 15. While they don't have a tender-beer-by-Baby moment (something that Sam and Dean often do during their heart to hearts), they do make up. But has too much damage been done?

2 Why Does Dean Not Try to Understand Castiel?

Dean, contrary to the image that he projects, is very understanding and empathetic. It may take him a little longer to get there than it does Sam, but he does get there. Usually, he is also able to admit his character flaws, too; those that may have inhibited misunderstanding.

However, with Castiel, he's less open to do so. Castiel gave up a lot to be there with them, and Castiel continually gives up a lot of himself. Dean may acknowledge this a little bit, but he doesn't fully try to understand it.

1 Is There Potential to the Sub-text?

Many fandoms ship Destiel, as a romantic duo, rather than solely the deep friendship that it shown in the show. Is this why Castiel cares so much about Dean, that special bond they share?

Although it's doubtful that Destiel will remain anything other than sub-text, this is the last season, so it could be possible.
