The Haunting Of Bly Manor: The Main Characters Ranked By Likability

The much-awaited follow up to the horror anthology’s The Haunting Of Hill House, Netflix’s The Haunting Of Bly Manor premiered on October 9th with its ghostly reimagining of The Turn Of The Screw. When a school teacher moves to rural England to become a governess to two recently orphaned children, she soon comes to realize that the lavish manor may be a host to more than just the living.

Though The Haunting Of Bly Manor mainly focuses on the few residents and employees of the manor, others are introduced through stories and flashbacks. This season features many complex and intriguing characters as the mystery of Bly unfolds, but some of the characters are more likable than others.

10 Peter Quint

While Peter first appears as handsome, charismatic, and utterly charming, as his story goes on it becomes clear how manipulative and abusive he truly is.

He is not only jealous and prone to angry outbursts at the woman that he claims to love, but he is a thief, repeatedly stealing from his employers. Even after his death, he puts his selfish needs over the lives of innocent children.

9 Lord Henry Wingrave

An absent uncle who wants very little to do with his orphaned niece and nephew, Lord Henry Wingrave prefers to hide away at his office and ignore responsibilities. He hires Dani as a governess and lets her and the housekeeper raise the children.

It is later revealed that he had a long-term affair with his brother's wife and that Flora is not his niece, but his daughter. Though he has a change of heart in the end, it's only after years of neglect.

8 Charlotte Wingrave

The late mother of Miles and Flora Wingrave, Charlotte seemed like a kind woman that did care about her children, even if she made mistakes.

She engaged in an affair with Henry, which led to genuine love between them and finally to the birth of Flora. She kept this information hidden for years, but her husband eventually found out the truth.

7 Miles Wingrave

Though many of Miles' negative personality quirks are not necessarily his fault (we're looking at you, Peter Quint), that does not negate that the fact that he is irritating and uncomfortable to watch.

Between his creepy flirtations with an adult woman and his sometimes violent acting out, it's difficult to get a read on "the real Miles", because much of his behavior is due to his unique situation.

6 Rebecca Jessel

Warm and intelligent, Rebecca Jessel was the first governess to the Wingrave children. Throughout her flashbacks, she is kindhearted and wonderful with both Flora and Miles.

Her downfall comes with her romance with Peter Quint. She quickly becomes dangerously wrapped up in the relationship. Despite his verbal abuse, she is desperate to make the relationship work, even if it means dying for him.

5 Flora Wingrave

There are two words to describe Flora Wingrave - perfectly splendid. Adorably brought to life by young actress Amelie Bea Smith, Flora is a pleasant contrast to Miles' spooky behavior near the beginning of the show.

She is full of life, love, and enthusiasm. She is only a young girl, but she is constantly ready to protect her friends around her, even if it means interacting with the tormented spirits in the house.

4 Jamie

Jamie starts out as a minor character that serves as the gardener and groundskeeper for Bly Manor, but by the end, it's Jamie that has helped turn this ghost story into a beautiful and tragic love story.

A bit gruff on the outside, on the inside, Jamie is good-natured, resourceful, and has a lot of love to give. She genuinely cares about her "family" at Bly Manor, and her relationship with Dani progresses in a natural and human way.

3 Dani Clayton

All Dani wanted was to make a difference. A strong-willed and kind-hearted school teacher, Dani left her career in part because she felt overwhelmed with so many children that needed her help.

Desperate to leave the demons of her last relationship in the past, Dani did her best every day to make life a little bit better for a pair of orphans that just needed someone to love them.

2 Hannah Grose

Hannah Grose was a long-time housekeeper for Bly Manor, but she was so much more than that. She was a protector, a surrogate mother, and a good friend.

Hannah has been through so much from the breaking up of her marriage to losing the Wingraves, and then dutifully staying on to care for the children. Even after death, she still stayed at the manor to care for them, because that's what Hannah does.

1 Owen Sharma

Who doesn't love Owen? Expertly played by Rahul Kohli, Owen is just a pure and gentle soul with genuine emotional depth. Serving as the cook for Bly Manor, Owen spends his days in the kitchen and his evenings taking care of his ailing mother.

Even though he is watching the slow death of his mother from dementia, he keeps his spirits up, jokes with the children and Dani, and is a faithful member of their blended little Bly family.
