Cyberpunk 2077 Mod Finally Lets You Change Your Hairstyle

A mod for Cyberpunk 2077 will let players change V's hairstyle without starting a new save file. Cyberpunk 2077, arguably the most hyped-up video game of the year, has had a quite disastrous launch. Months of delays and broken promises concerning developer crunch cast some doubts on the game, which were proven correct when it released in a clearly unfinished state, especially on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, to the point where even physical copies of the game can be refunded. While some players are enjoying the game, when they can get it to work, other aspects and strange decisions are being criticized as the massive RPG continues its extremely troubled release.

One criticism that the game has faced outside of its broken state is its handling of cyberpunk themes. Cyberpunk represents a futuristic capitalist dystopia, where humanity and technology have merged to the point where previous notions of gender and sexuality have been torn up. Despite this, there are issues with its trans representation, and, astoundingly, there is no way to change a character's appearance after exiting character creation. Other games usually have to create an implausible in-world solution to allow a character's appearance to be changed, but the one game where doctors can change out a character's components like a vehicle has no such option. Now, at least one aspect of a character's appearance can be altered through mods.

As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, a new mod titled "User-Friendly Hairstyle Changer" from Nexus Mods user utf8x allows players to change their hairstyle without restarting their save - but hairstyle colors must stay the same. The modder explains this is due to an issue with save files that can become corrupted when compressed and decompressed. Hairstyles can be changed by editing a text file, which is why they can be affected for now. Down the line, utf8x thinks that changing facial hair "should be possible," while changing hair and eye colors "might be possible." These could be added to future updates of the mod.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an entirely first-person game, so V's appearance does not make too much of a difference. However, players can still examine their characters in mirrors, which might make players want to change up their character's appearance. It's possible that these features will be added through free DLC, an approach taken with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, but even the medieval fantasy lands explored by Geralt had barbers on launch day. Post-character creation customization options were clearly not a priority for CD Projekt Red, and decisions like this are adding to the frustration of its employees.

It's remarkable to think that a AAA game requires a mod to allow players to get a haircut, and even more damning that the game's strange code won't allow for color changes. There are certainly bigger problems with the game - its broken release on old consoles, broken promises to developers, and broken approach to cyberpunk themes - but this is yet another flaw that shows the faults of the crunch development style. There are few games that matched the pre-release hype of the game, and even fewer that matched the disastrous launch, so riddled with problems that investors might take legal action. Until then, some PC players can experience the exhilarating, futuristic rush of a haircut in Cyberpunk 2077.
