The much-hated C.R.A.D.L.E agents are still causing problems for Marvel’s teenaged vigilantes in upcoming Ms. Marvel comics, and the organization is about to become even more dangerous, sporting new tech at the absolute worst time for Ms. Marvel and company.
Since the life and law-changing fight at Coles Academic High School, things have gone from bad to worse for Marvel’s young superheroes. After Kamala Khan was injured and left in a coma, laws were swiftly put in place, barring anyone under the age of 21 from fighting crime. Now, the Child Hero Reconnaissance And Disruption Law Enforcement Organization—otherwise known as C.R.A.D.L.E—are plucking teen crime fighters off the streets and shipping them off to re-education camps. This all leaves Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and the remaining free, young crime fighters in a bit of a predicament.
In Magnificent Ms. Marvel #17, readers see just how much of a hindrance C.R.A.D.L.E is to heroes like Kamala who are just trying to do their best to keep others safe. We see Kamala as she races through the streets of Jersey City, pursued by Dum Dum Dugan and a gaggle of other C.R.A.D.L.E goons. As they trade barbs, Kamala grabs most of her pursuers off the street and places them on the rooftops above, leaving them out of the way. When it’s just her and Dugan left, Kamala asks him to back off, pointing out that he “[doesn’t] even have any powers.” But Dugan has a trick up his sleeve, pointing out that he was a Boy Scout and always comes prepared before revealing a souped-up, electrified suit.
The appearance of tech capable of taking on a superhero in the C.R.A.D.L.E. arsenal is certain to throw a spanner in the works for Ms. Marvel as she searches for missing young people in her hometown of Jersey City. Throughout the issue, readers get a glimpse of the threat that is plaguing the city’s streets, preying on young people in a similar way to how C.R.A.D.L.E is. Except where one is “re-educating”, the other is, literally, consuming.
It’s difficult to say how C.R.A.D.L.E’s new tech will affect the ongoing fight they are in with young superheroes, or exactly what this new tech even is or how it will be used. One thing is certain, however; the fighting is about to get a whole lot crazier. Magnificent Ms. Marvel #17 by Saladin Ahmed, Minkyu Jung, Ian Herring, and VC Joe Caramagna is available now.
