Parks And Rec: 10 Things You Forgot From The First Episode

In 2009, Parks & Recreation hit the airwaves and became one of the best sitcoms of all time. However, it had a rocky start with the first season. The series featured an outstanding ensemble cast that all became significant stars.

Initially, it did appear that Parks & Rec would be another forgotten show after the first episode. However, the creators made some adjustments and managed to transform the show into a massive success. New characters arrived in Pawnee while others moved away. The storylines got more appealing and the writing got even more humorous. It's probably why the pilot episode seems to be a long-distance memory as even the most hardcore fans forgot about these details.

10 Ben And Chris Don't Appear In Pilot

Leslie Knope cared deeply about her work in the Parks Department and the government. However, she also had quite the love life as she enters a sweet and endearing relationship with her soulmate, Ben Wyatt.

Ben and Chris Traeger were two essential characters to the show. But Ben and Chris don't appear in the first episode as they only came in at the end of season two. It was an excellent move on the writers' and casting directors' behalf to include them in.

9 Tom's Green Card Marriage

Tom Haverford always claimed to be a ladies' man but he seemed to struggle in that department. However, that did not mean he was always this way.

Considering how sleazy and creepy he was in the first episode, fans were surprised when Tom reveals that he's married. While many people were questioning how Wendy managed to fall with a jerk like him, the writers threw another curveball the audiences way when he admits it was just a green card marriage.

8 Leslie And The Pit

The last few seasons, Parks & Rec was seen to revolve around Leslie running for office and focusing on more than the Parks Department. However, the first episode revolves around the 'infamous pit.' Some fans may remember how Leslie and the Parks Department spent a long time trying to transform the hole into a beautiful park.

Of course, back in the pilot, it was still a giant pit. As Leslie was trying to be helpful, she ended up falling into the hole. It's safe to say the Leslie fans saw in the finale wouldn't make that same mistakes again.

7 Andy Dwyer Became A Breakout Star

Chris Pratt became one of the breakout stars with his role as Andy Dwyer. Indeed, Parks & Rec wouldn't be the same without Andy. Andy and April's relationship is a crucial part of the series.

Initially, the producers only wanted Andy to be in the first season. However, midway through the season, the producers realized that the character had potential and decided to keep him. After a couple of changes to his character, he soon became the lovable breakout star.

6 Leslie And Mark

It's easy to see that Leslie Knope and Ben Wyatt were soulmates. It's tough to see them with anyone else. Of course, Ben doesn't appear in the first episode.

Instead, Leslie's co-worker, Mark Brendanawicz, was the man she had initially been in love with. However, since there wasn't much chemistry between he and Leslie, and his storylines with Ann began to dwindle, it wasn't long before he exited the show.

5 Andy And Ann

Andy Dwyer and April Ludgate's love story was central to the series. However, Andy was actually with Ann Perkins in the first episode. At this point, they had been dating for a few years. Andy and Ann had relationship issues and broke up towards the end of the season.

While Andy and April have a brief interaction, it does become clear that they are characters are suited for each other. Later, Ann meets Chris Traeger and they eventually move away to start a life together. Both couples are perfect for each other and work better than the original pairing.

4 Changing Leslie

At the time, the creators modeled Parks & Rec after the highly successful sitcom The Office. Both shows had similar tones, story structure, and formats. Initially, Leslie Knope was almost a female version of Michael Scott since she had traits of being an airhead, annoying, and an unbearable boss.

However, audiences didn't respond to the character. The creators then made some slight changes to Leslie's character and made her intelligent, hard-working, and excellent at her job. Of course, she could still be a bit annoying from time to time.

3 Mark And Ron Help Leslie

For most of the episode, Leslie appears to annoy Mark. Indeed, he doesn't even remember making out with her. While Mark was aware of Leslie's crush on him and expressed he wasn't interested, he did show that he cares about her well-being when she fell into the pit.

Despite hating his job, Mark realizes that Leslie is quite passionate about her job and helping the community. Surprisingly, Mark goes to Ron Swanson and calls in a favor. He wants him to let Leslie have the pit so she can build a park. Indeed, Ron even ends up helping Leslie several times throughout the series.

2 Leslie Meets Ann

Several critical moments take place in the first episode. Of course, nothing is more important than the first time Leslie met Ann. Their friendship became the heart of the series. However, they aren't immediate friends. In their first meeting, Ann attends a public forum to discuss the giant hole behind her house.

Ann's surprised when Leslie takes it seriously and makes an effort to help. The pit brought them together, and they became the best of friends. Indeed, Leslie is devastated when Ann and Chris leave Pawnee.

1 Leslie's Co-Workers Reacts To Her Positively

As noted, Leslie Knope is an overbearing and unbearable boss in the first episode. She annoys her staff and drives them crazy. However, audiences reacted poorly, so the series made some changes. Not only did they make slight changes to Leslie's character but made significant changes with her co-workers too.

Leslie's team responds to her differently and positively. She might annoy them from time to time, but they respect her and always do what she wants. They want her approval and genuinely care for her.
